Tods Murray is being sued by a wannabe trainee who claims he was denied a training contract because he was too old.

Andrew McSorley was 36 when he applied for a job with the Edinburgh firm. He was rejected, and is now taking Tods Murray to court claiming that the fact that the oldest candidate it hired was 26, is evidence he was rejected on the grounds of age.

Tods Murray wearily pointed out that it requires a minimum of a 2:1 degree from all its trainees, McSorley only has a Bachelor of Laws Diploma and as such he was bound to fall at the first hurdle. McSorley argues that 2:1s were much rarer in his day, meaning that the policy amounts to indirect age discrimination.

McSorley has also announced that he will also be pursuing another two firms which rejected him, again on the grounds of age discrimination. He plans to show that young women are at an unfair advantage when it comes to securing a training contract, and will be representing himself.

A spokesman for Tods Murray said that “our website clearly states: “Please note that you are required to have a minimum degree classification of a 2:1 in order to apply. This statement was there for all applicants to read.”
