There be dragons in these court papers

A judge has reprimanded a US lawyer for pasting a purple dragon watermark on each page of his submissions.

Jacob A. Perrone, a lawyer in Michigan, recently launched his firm with a name fit for litigators and LARPing: Dragon Lawyers. Naturally, it has a purple dragon wearing a suit as its logo, which Perrone said he purchased online for about $20.

Perrone explained that he opted for a mythical fire-breather to convey “aggressive representation”, noting that some lawyers liked to style themselves as “bulldogs”.

He also said that he chose the branding as “people like dragons,” and Game of Thrones was an inspiration.

Strangely, nothing about knight-slaying under the website's FAQs

However, the mighty power of the dragon's flames has been doused by a bigger beast - Judge Kent, a curse be upon him.

Perrone was bested while acting for a prison inmate making a complaint against the Sheriff's department. Perhaps overestimating the appeal of his brand, he included his dragon logo as a watermark on all twelve pages of his submission.

Judge Kent noting that it "is dominated by a large multicolored cartoon dragon dressed in a suit”, which he said was "not only distracting" but also "juvenile and impertinent", adding: “The Court is not a cartoon”.

Judge Kent ordered that lawsuit be refiled “without the cartoon dragon”.

Perrone confirmed that he would remove the dragon, saying: “I regret putting it on the pleadings so prominently displayed,” according to reports.

Perrone, who has practised law for 17 years, said he would continue using the dragon, but would be more cautious about including it on legal documents.
