Putting the fun into nonfungible.

The Law Society is releasing its own collection of NFTs, RollOnFriday has learned.

NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, have become a lucrative phenomenon, with celebrities like Diplo, Justin Bieber and Paris Hilton throwing away six figure sums on images of chimps from the wildly successful 'Bored Ape Yacht Club' NFT collection.

An NFT is a receipt which exists only on the blockchain (a decentralised digital ledger), and which proves ownership of an object. Now the Law Society intends to capitalise on the much-hyped NFT market by minting its own artworks, according to a document leaked to RollOnFriday.

'Law God Chip Shop', due to launch this summer, will comprise 10,000 lawyer-themed NFTs which the Law Society expects to become must-have status symbols among the upper echelons of the profession.

"Our concept revolves around a storyline in which brilliant lawyers hang out together in a members-only chip shop", the document explains. "Each character in the NFT collection depicts the various traits and augmentations which might be associated with a group of legal practitioners who decide to frequent a chip shop to shoot the breeze, dance, fight, flirt, and eat fish and/or chips".

Reflecting the huge sums paid for Bored Apes, the Law Society has set a floor price for each of the first Law Gods of £100,000, which it says is a "conservative" estimate given the anticipated demand. The extraordinary price is intended to "foster a sense of exclusivity" which will push the value of the limited edition assets even higher, according to the document.

The NFTs will generate income for the Law Society not just from their initial sale, but also from a 2.5% royalty on future trades.

In order to "create a template for evoking sustained euphoria and prestige among the Law God Chip Shop members", the Law Soc's plan includes launching a spin-off collection, called 'Law God Para Beagles'. It will comprise 10,000 digital dog NFTs conceived as companions bred to serve the Law Gods, distributed for free to all Law God Chip Shop owners.

However, the venture looks set to cause controversy, as each Law God is based on a lightly pixelated photo of an actual UK lawyer, none of whom was contacted for permission to use their image "in order to avoid arguments over what accessories they want".

There are also concerns the project's launch may have to be delayed. Each Law God is created individually by a single Law Society employee, rather than instantly generated by an algorithm like the Bored Apes. "Substantial savings have been achieved by utilising an employee in IT to create the artworks", the Law Soc document reveals. "However, so far Janet has only completed eight of them, and she has expressed doubts that she can produce the remaining 9,992 Law Gods within our nine day timeframe".

RollOnFriday has been passed copies of Law Gods #1-8, but please DO NOT right click and save them, as they do not belong to you.

It may be 1 April, but, as nothing would surprise me about the chocolate fireguard Law Soc, I had to read this twice to convince myself it wasn't true!
