Credit crunch defying results across the City haven't been enough to save Eversheds' real estate lawyers. The firm confirmed yesterday that a whopping 33 lawyers were at risk of redundancy.

A month long consultation period has just been launched. Lee Ranson, head of the firm's real estate group, laid the blame squarely at the door of the "sustained downturn in activity" in the property market. The redundancies were necessary to "safeguard the long term sustainable health of our real estate practice group".

It's not the best time to be a real estate lawyer - Olswang laid off five back in November, Howard Kennedy put its department on notice in June and Field Fisher Waterhouse confirmed last month that "several" real estate lawyers would be affected. But 33 lawyers - that's an awful lot...

A spokeswoman for the firm confirmed that Leeds was likely to be hit hardest, with nine lawyers at risk, followed by Manchester (seven), London and Birmingham (five each), Newcastle (four) and Cardiff (three).
