office romance

It’s Office Romance Goblin, here to ruin everyone's fun.

Teams at two firms have been thrown into disarray after a love triangle between three City lawyers spun out of control.

RollOnFriday isn’t identifying any of the participants, or their firms, or their practice groups, because they're only guilty of poor romantic choices, sorry.

The hijinks began when a partner at the first firm, ‘Mr Partner’, fell head over heels for a trainee in his department, ‘Ms Trainee’, multiple sources told ROF.

It was a risky romance for Mr Partner because of the gap in seniority between the two. And because Mr Partner was also already in a long term relationship with another partner in the department, Mrs Partner.

The firm is “famously a pit of incest”, said a source, and complicating matters further, Mrs Partner was Ms Trainee’s supervisor.

When the stolen kisses became public knowledge within the firm, “shit hit the fan”. The relationship between Mr Partner and Mrs Partner ended and they “couldn’t be in the same room as each other”, which caused “political chaos” among the wider department's partners, said sources.

Mrs Partner was part of a practice group which had been earmarked as an important area of development for the firm, and the decision was made to push out the male partner as a “quick solve”.

After Mr Partner was dismissed, the trainee opted not to stay either and moved to another firm, “understandably” seeking “a clean break”, said a source.

But three months later Mrs Partner left as well to follow a number of her colleagues to a firm where they had decided to take their burgeoning practice.

Unfortunately, it was the same firm that Ms Trainee had joined, and ROF understands that the two women are now trapped together in the same department, again.

“So everyone has lost out”, summarised a source. “The trainee doesn’t get her clean break. The partner who was dismissed lost his job. The partner who was cheated on has to see the other lady everyday at work”.

And the first firm “took a bet to back the partner in the area it saw for growth only for that whole team, including the partner, to take that practice to a competitor”.

It’s “hilarious” said an unsympathetic source at the second firm.

ROF didn't ask any of the fuming lovebirds for comment in case it caused another rash of sackings and quittings.

Tip Off ROF

As soon as you read the words "‘Mr Partner’, fell head over heels for a trainee in his department", you might be able to detect that this is not going to end comfortably. But even so, what a mess.

Very obvious who this is about. [redacted - ROF ain’t gonna publish comments purporting to identify the firms]

"Pit of Incest" is my favourite grindcore band, but I prefer their earlier work.

10 minutes on google and some cross checking on linkedin will get you there.  Most lateral hires into US firms make the legal press.

A few years ago this would definitely have been Jones Day. These days not so much. The days of porn limos in Vegas, shared showers with vac. students and the overbooked sleeping pods seem a distant memory.
