Legal Advisor

Salary: £36,000 - £40,000 per annum (dependent upon experience)

Permanent, full-time (35 hours per week)

The Royal Yachting Association, based in Hamble, near Southampton, is the national governing body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating.  It represents dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sportsboats, windsurfing, inland cruising and personal watercraft.

The RYA works actively, and tirelessly, to represent and protect the interests of its members, affiliates and Recognised Training Centres at government level.  We provide a tailored Legal Advisory and Information Service to those external stakeholders, and work towards protecting existing boating facilities and promoting the expansion of facilities to cater for the future needs of the sport.  Access to legal advice on boating related issues is a key tangible benefit to personal and organisational members of the RYA.

The Role

The RYA is looking for an accomplished legal professional to play a key part in its Legal Advisory Service.

As the successful candidate your role will be to work with the Legal Manager in providing advice and information to personal members, affiliates and training centres on legal matters.  This will include producing standard documentation and advising on contractual arrangements.

You will also be required to research areas of legal interest likely to affect our personal members, affiliates and Recognised Training Centres, and support the wider Cruising, Legal and Government Affairs department in representing the interests of the RYA to legislators, regulators and officials at all levels to ensure the policies and interests of the RYA are taken into account at all times. 

We are seeking a candidate who has:

  • Knowledge of contract law, law of tort, consumer law and insurance law;
  • A proficient ability in drafting, reviewing and negotiating on commercial contracts;
  • The ability to effectively represent, advocate and negotiate at all levels; and
  • The ability to exercise good judgement under pressure.
