The Opportunity

We are looking to recruit a Mid-level Associate to join our Commercial Practice Group in the London office. This role will have a particular focus on working with retail & consumer brands, with a breadth of work across largely business to business transactions as well as the integration of different routes to market including e-commerce/ direct consumer transactions. The brands will come from a variety of sectors, but with a particular focus on; retail (including luxury brands), wellness focused businesses, food & beverage and hotels, and hospitality and leisure sectors.

This team is consistently and increasingly busy so there is an opportunity to play an active role internally and through business development to help grow and shape the firm’s offering in this area. Many client mandates in this area are also cross-border, meaning the successful candidate with have the opportunity to work with colleagues across Bird & Bird's international network.

What You'll Do

The successful candidate will work with an exciting list of instantly recognisable retail & consumer brands, including leading luxury brands, food and beverage businesses, wellness focused businesses and hotels, hospitality and leisure businesses. Clients will also include businesses in the services sector and digital businesses, such as online marketplaces and start-ups.

You will be expected to demonstrate and continually develop top-tier legal expertise. You will have a natural interest in your clients' businesses, strategies, challenges and opportunities and will partner closely with them by providing excellent, efficient service and valuable, independently minded insight. An approach which combines high levels of commerciality without ever losing integrity is essential, as is a flexible and responsive approach to meeting client needs.

You will be part of a close-knit team of Partners and Associates who are passionate about the law in this area. You will be given the opportunity and support to develop the skills to mentor, supervise and take responsibility for more junior associates and trainees. The Partners in this area are also highly supportive of business development (including internal cross-selling), and would support the successful candidate building their profile in this area, including winning and growing client relationships, attending pitches, speaking at conferences and article writing. The role offers potentially significant career progression.

 

About You

  • Specialist knowledge within franchising and supply chain matters including warehousing, distribution and logistics.
  • General commercial law experience gained in a leading firm or in-house team.
  • Interest in and experience of advising retail & consumer brands in the industry sectors detailed above, perhaps on secondment or whilst working in-house, would be advantageous.
  • Intellectual curiosity and an interest in keeping abreast of this fast-moving area of law.
  • The ability to work directly with clients and able to distil complex legal advice in a clear, precise and commercial manner.
  • The ability to juggle multiple matters at the same time.
  • A desire to support business development activity both internal and external, creating and maintaining strong client relationships and identifying new business opportunities.
  • The ability to liaise effectively with other fee earners from within the group, but also to liaise and coordinate with fee earners from other relevant disciplines and jurisdictions; and
  • The ability to use social media platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, Instagram) to broadcast or amplify messages and to connect with external contacts/networks.
