I like watching short track speed skating - pace and peril.
I love the trad major alpine events: downhill, slalom, ski jump… may x-country (more awe than love)
I respect Nordic biathlon. It’s less fascinating than it is exhausting and impressive.
I love some of the new sports: ski-cross etc
I have a total adoration and excitement about bobsled, luge and skeleton. I’ve actually competed in 4-man bob. Yeah. Not well! I have done the 4-man at La Plagne in competition two years after the 1992 Olympics. I was in position 3. It hurt.
Very respectful of these people. It is one thing to compete in Olympic sport, but it is quite another to do it at altitude and with nothing between you and ice but a very thin Lycra suit.
I watched some of the curling earlier. Mixed doubles. Team GB spanking the s. Koreans. But I'm buggered if i know what is going on.
"They still have the hammer"
There was no hammer.
"Now they're using the power play"
Eh?
Risky heard that ski jumpers get penis lengthening injections so he's signing up.
Flare up the bum, acid injection in the love truncheon. Risky's weekend is sorted.
Burning the candle at both ends.
We are watching the opening ceremony
It’s a good relief from minkie Mum death watch
So far, so good.
Good luck with that, Minkie.
Mum death watch is a tiring business. It seems to last an age. You them die but you don’t want it to occur. A painful paradox.
And we are a year on from all of that and at the moment going through different stages of delayed grief.
One of my sisters has gone absolutely crackers. She is angry. Now going on about how much she hated my mother. Of course she was the one who was more heavily involved in her last years - champion carer - clearly some complex guilt-driven attempt to develop a love before it is too late. That didn’t last and now she is in hate again, not love. What price a bit of stabIkiru and consistency eh?
One of them has gone silent. Perhaps more concerning. Who know?
My brother has gone all ‘project complete a finisher’ with everyone getting emails about signing off stuff all the time. Fair enough. That’s his senior prefect self soothe.
Me, oh I’m in a blur and don’t remember her. That seems too weird to deal with.
Sorry -
You will them to die but you don’t want it to occur. A painful paradox.
Not looking forward to this at all. Your wisdom both is appreciated X
Yessss! Please die, but dont!!
That is exactly what it is
Golly I am so glad you said this.
And yes there will be all Sorts to come
I have sorted so e music for funeral. Some notes for the eulogy. A place for the wake.
What else???
She is not gone yet…
It's kinda like dealing with a new baby. Have some pre-cooked meals in the freezer, as you won't have the bandwidth or interest to cook anything you need to eat.
Yes and we have had alcohol this evening. I have said to the care home, no late calls.
So
Re the music, mutts, you will know about this, I have noted celtic harp classical (she was irish) and some guy doing annies song on steel pans (she loved caribbean) and a hymn and an irish melody.
But my sis will do the funeral.
Sorry for all this
Don't be sorry Minks, if RoF has a purpose at all it is for this sort of thing.
It doesn't make it easier, but a problem shared and all that.
My old man's funeral was a long time ago and was (at his request, such as he ever made any), a "humanist" affair.
He went into the oven with bright side of life playing. Much to the sneery face of the celebrant (or whatever the correct term is).
Biathlon is my fave.
But I've got into the mixed doubles curling too this year.
Did Vance and Rubio get booed during the opening ceremony?
Wang -
The hammer is the final stone, and the advantage gained therein.
Power Play is when the players elect to move the starting stones off centre. It's about as pointless as Power Play in cricket, if not quite as annoying.
Cheers dux. I think having to scoot down actual Thor hammers for one turn a round would be a good alteration.
We (for we are all team GB for the moment, obv) gave the Canucks some shoe pie this morning!
The downhill would be more fun if they had 2 or 3 of them going at once
I trust all good roffers are rooting for Breezy Johnson in the downhill?
Breezy's bound to win - with a wonderful name like that.......
How come Russia’s banned and Israel isn’t?
Minkie it sounds like you are well ahead with planning the arrangements which is a good thing. When my dad died, it was unexpected. We had no experience of funeral directors, no church that he attended and my mum just left it all to me. I wrote his eulogy and regard it as my finest work, chose the music and arranged the wake. I feel very pleased we gave him a good sendoff even if he would describe it as a waste of money
We are old hands gwen and our first experience was a multiple…that was a challenge. Actually the Sochi Olys were on when father died now I remember.
I already have that knackered feeling you get with grief even though mum still with us. And there’s another funeral to get through before Mum as well!
Which makes us sound very unhealthy, far from it, they all die old.
good luck. Stay strong
If Breezy Johnson isnt enough to make all you miserables smile I give up!
Epic crash in the same event. Hope that lady is ok
Enjoyed the opening ceremony, have watched quite a of bit downhill over the last couple of days, couldn’t get into the curling
The Lindsey Vonn crash was horrible
She seemed to be moving as they loaded her into the heli lift thingy so fingers crossed
Apparently (according to Balders just now) she fractured her leg. Must have been a bad one - operated on this arvo.
Was it the dodgy one?
I heard Chemmy yesterday saying LV had the view that if she raced and fvcked the knee then she’d just get a new joint - to match the one on the right.
But a break is a different matter!
dunno m7, balders was skant on detail
The snowboarders are getting minced here
The Vonn crash was horrible but such complete hubris. I hate to see someone who has had a great career refuse to acknowledge the impact of injury and when to stop. I listened to the arrogance of her presser after the injury where she said ‘I race on the margins and so I crash’ and thought there is someone who has crashed and refuses to acknowledge that the end has come. Now she may have a life changing injury. FFS
Clutch jump from Mia Brookes, almost guaranteed top 12 now.
Maisie Hill out but she's a slopestyler.
You can grab my tail any time Scept Tick
Breezy Johnson
Kilt wearer’s name
The BBC coverage of the accident is gushing emotional shit
I wonder if Breezy Johnson is a good friend of Chilly Willy?
Re Vonn, that is the personality that has won her so much success. The one comes with the other. Criticising her for competing is just a bit dumb imho.
You can have a life changing injury at any time as a downhill skier; sounds like she's just broken a leg, she'll probably be absolutely fine.
It needed surgery though. That is not good. But she hit a gate her leg didnt give way. 🤷🏻♀️
You do have to go for broke in downhill, even chemmy said downhillers have a screw loose its part of the territory
Lawyers wouldnt do ti!
And i can take the downhill gushy coverage a lot better than I can old git ed leigh is just dreadful we have to watch the big air with the sound down.
I am a big Ed Leigh fan, and not just because of how hard he would get it.
Him and Tim just don’t seem to gel easily
You can see (I think) from the footage of the Vonn crash her left leg is broken. Initially I was #Team sheshouldneverhavebeenthere but actually she has been leading the downhill rankings all season and has still been performing at a high level - she fitness tested the knee and passed so fair play to her I say
I would call anyone who tried a downhill with that injury reckless but even more so if it’s something they’ve won before and have nothing left to prove. Thankfully I seem to have the opposite personality and winning one big event was enough for me to prove I could do that then go back to mainly staying in my comfort zone.
mutters was in cool running?
Latest BBC report says it was the same leg as the bust ACL. Orthapeadic surgery to stabilise the fracture. Nasty. Skiing is silly.
Skiing very fast is silly. Using skis to convey yourself between scenic points to eat and drink is perfectly reasonable.
I was not in Cool Runnings.
I have competed in an amateur 4-man bob competition, back in the day when I could run fast and push hard then sit still and cope with g-force on my neck and back (for those who haven't done this sport I just want to contextualise this. A bob-sled is about as well upholstered as a kitchen tray. You're just in a moulded glass fibre box. Your bum's softness is the only thing that absorbs the bumps from the runners through the sled. Corners towards the second half of the run are at 80-100pmh and at that speed you dump into them, snap round and fly out, pulling 5-6G. You're in a crouch with a bent back and head down, face down and neck bent. The compression G is nasty and hurts at the top of the back and thoracic vertebrae. You don't see much as you are looking down (unless you are the driver). You have a sense of bright, dark, bright, dark and a lot of noise and every single imperfection in the ice just rattles through your soul through your arse.
Of all the things I've done in the name of adrenaline sports this was the least pleasant.
On the plus side, your schnoz was just mm away from the lycra clad sweaty bottom of a burly pal
