Who would even want to have to negotiate our trade deal now?

It means having to pick up halfway through, hogtied by someone else's withdrawal agreement in the full knowledge of how the EU are going to behave and facing the very likely prospect of failing to reach a trade deal leaving the UK in stasis for ever.

If I was an MP now I would make TMPM finish what she has started. There is no way I would pick up this time bomb.

TMPM's deal just leads to customs union in the end, doesn't it?  I can't see how we are ever going to agree anything less than that given the border issue.  The backstop is such a rubbish option for both sides.

I reckon we will end up with May's deal plus customs union minus backstop, possibly put to a referendum with the option to remain.

And Jacob Rees Mogg will spontaneously combust. (We can only hope.)

Given the "ambitious" level of market access we want for both goods and services, full alignment is almost inevitable.

The EU simply cannot offer us terms that would allow us a competitive advantage in regulatory terms.  It would make no sense for them.

They are happy to include customs union in the political statement and in practice there would be no problem if we wanted to go for that, as it would remove the backstop issue.

Who TF would want to step in to those shoes.?

Boris Johnson.  Raaaab.  Loathsom, probably.  David Davis.  Esther McVey.  People who really believe in a hard brexit, or who don't care what happens and just want to be PM (Johnson).
