Trump refusing to work with UK ambassador to US

Oops.  Well not really all that unexpected I suppose but it does leave us in quite a difficult position really.  If we don’t change, we have no diplomatic comms to the White House, if we do change it looks like we are his lackeys.

He's leaving soon and retiring at the end of the year anyway. Not him that's the issue.

No worries Dr Fox has inside track with Ivanka. Off to discuss Brexit with her this week.

Wonder what the Tories would had said if Mandelson had gone to US to negotiate trade policy with Chelsea Clinton.

Rather proves the ambassador's point in his memo...

How can anyone run a government these days?  Political leaks by politicians and civil servants make it almost impossible to give candid opinions.

He must go. His position is untenable. He's done nothing wrong, but WTF doesn't he reisgn?

Sour leftie liberal.

Everyone knows The Donald is WINNING.

But, because he committed the gross crime of being Not Hillary, nothing good can ever, ever be said  about him.

3-ducks is right.

The Ambassador is probably right about Trump, but if you get caught slagging off the head of state of the country you are in then you can't really continue in that role. Not really his fault, but thems the breaks when you are a diplomat.

I reckon he will quietly be retired a little ahead of schedule by the new PM.

All ambassadors do this with the places they are stationed.

The US was caught out a few years ago when all those emails got leaked about what they really thought about the countries and the people, they were posted in

There was a bit of a  fuss, then it all died down but no one threw all thier toys out of the cot like Trump has

Wot abs sed. Normally if you’re a statesman you would say nothing

The President's taken the perfectly reasonable view that he can't work with him. How could he now?

As opposed to Trump’s fine record of working well with everyone else who comes into contact with him?

From what I've read Trump has had no direct dealings with him and I assume the US civil servants he deals with are carrying on as normal and muttering darkly about their supreme boss.

The reason he hasn’t resigned is that he’s waiting for a steer from HM Governmemt as to whether they wish him to. While it would probably be a justifiable pragmatic decision to end his tenure early, it’s perfectly viable to keep him, as the ambassador and the mission generally don’t primarily deal with the President, they deal with the State Department.

Also, there’s massive political capital for Hunt, in the leadership ballot, in refusing to kowtow to Trump. Even though it’s arguably Hunt himself who should resign, as the root cause of all this is the inability of the Foreign Office to maintain confidentiality. That may be the clue as to who was responsible actually - someone seeking to damage Hunt - but as I say, if he can hold out against Trump then it will win him votes among the membership.

“The President's taken the perfectly reasonable view that he can't work with him. How could he now?”

Try not to talk sh1t on the internet. He could work with him quite easily as well you know, by being a mature adult, as virtually any other democratically elected leader in the world, or even Theresa May, would do.

Have you seen Trumps latest tweets!!

Donald J. Trump@realDonaldTrump

The wacky Ambassador that the U.K. foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy. He should speak to his country, and Prime Minister May, about their failed Brexit negotiation, and not be upset with my criticism of how badly it was...

...handled. I told @theresa_may how to do that deal, but she went her own foolish way-was unable to get it done. A disaster! I don’t know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool. Tell him the USA now has the best Economy & Military anywhere in the World, by far...

And Donald single-handedly validates the ambassador's (privately expressed) opinion of him.  What an utter twat.

Why do Tories keep spouting so much shyt about these idiots being our “special” “best friends”? Even if every criticism ever raised of the EU was 100% accurate - and clearly most of them are utter tosh made up by nationalist freakogogues - the EU would still be a fvckload more worthwhile an ally and partner than the US.

One fact that keeps slipping down the radar - these memos are from 2017 when one B Johnson was ForSec.

So either someone has gone back and leaked from the historic archive or someone half inched them back then for future use

"I don’t know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool"

What, a Foreign Office man? Surely some mistake lol!

Oh dux, are you ever, ever right about anything?

Have you actually read anything that anyone who knows a thing about the ambassador has said about him?

In any event, even if he were pompous (although self effacing or some variation on this theme seems to be what most people are saying), the foreign office certainly doesn’t send fools to be ambassador to Washington.

Isn't this the sort of spat that Ferrero Rochers were made to resolve?

The latest trump tweets are deeply disturbing.  You think you’re hard bitten, nothing can get to you anymore, along comes trump and the jaw drops once again

Why would an ambassador given a shite about the economy of the country he's posted to and its military?  Yes he'll report on both but he's hardly worrying about how good it is.

has there been any speculation on the who and the why of this leak?

There's some speculation it's an attempt to discredit Hunt as he's Foreign Secretary but also a theory that it's an attempt to replace the ambassador with a Brexiteer but not sure why that's relevant.

both of those are so stupid its hard to fathom the brain that came up with them.

i.e. Hunt himself.

Word is he saw the writing on the wall given what Johnson didn't say last night

His resignation is the correct thing to do as a diplomat.

He leaves with his head held high resolving a nasty mess for everyone.
