Years ago my old firm tried to get me to relocate there "on a promise". They prepped one of my colleagues who had relocated to take me out for a beer and convince me.
"it's great" he said "you can get a really nice apartment with 2 or 3 bedrooms and the cost of Filipino child care is so low you never have to look after your kids or cook".
"err, I have a nice house with a garden, chiz".
I realise this comes across as very chambesque. I have no idea how people cope with the hours and the heat there. Is it still Saturday working as the norm?
Remember going round one of the islands in HK (Chung Chow?) and 5 minutes from the luxury beachside developments there was a proper slum shanty town.
While we are debating this can we just take a moment to big up the humble umbrella? In the UK this is just something you have a pile of at home and always forget to bring one when it's chucking it down and otherwise use for taking up space in the boot of the car, getting in the way of coats and wellies in the cupboard etc.
Yet in Hong Kong it is an item of personal defence used to fend of CS gas canisters, plastic bullets (mmm, really?) projectiles and, on the underground, a complete answer to the oncoming Triad mobster.
