Things to see / Places to eat in Balham?

Hoping to check out the neighborhood soon. I was there YEARS ago for some erstwhile roffer's gig (he was a musician but I don't remember if he was a lawyer--anybody remember who I'm talking about? "Cern" something?) Any tips/recommendations?

I remember Cern.  One of the good ones IIRC.

The Devonshire Pub was a fave when I lived just off Wandsworth Common.  Fvck knows what else is worthwhile seeing in Balham though.

OK "things to see" may not be what I am actually after--more interested in getting a good sense of the vibe of the place as somewhere to potentially live.

The Banana Cabaret comedy club at the Bedford pub is something of an institution.

Oh, yes, forgot about that.  More recently for me it was the Bearcat comedy at the Turks Head obvs but back in the late nineties/early noughties Banana was a regular night out.

Just google[maps]d it. Blimey, I think I went there with my new housemates when I lived in Streatham in 1988.

There used to be a great sri lankan resto in blahm

No idea what it was called or whether it still exists

Balham Bowls Club is a old bowling club turned pub which is very popular with the locals but currently shut for refurbishment.  https://www.urbanpubsandbars.com/venues/balham-bowls-club

The Devonshire is still alive and well and has a big garden.

Lots of assorted places to eat on Bedford Hill including a good Turkish.

In the less popular bit south of the station you'll find Bucci which is a good old fashioned Italian (has even been involved in an investigation into a mafia wine and VAT scam) and this place which does good kind of modern Indian https://balhamsocial.com/

If Balham is still known as 'Gateway to the South' then I would presume that there are a few good KFCs nearby!

+1 for Balham Bowls Club, and The Bedford, the mini-theatre in there is awesome.

I think there's a station there that will take you up to london in around 20 mins

Sri Lankan place was Hop & Spice.  They matched dishes to recommended real ales

In terms of things to see, you’ll see its full of people priced out of Clapham without the imagination to find anywhere cooler to live.

I saw Jimmy Carr at the Banana Cabaret around 2000 IIRC. Remember him completely dismantling a heckler.

Also remember Cern, in fact I saw him last month. He's doing well.

When a man is tired of Balham, he is tired of life
