There are reports Mark Hollis has died

Very sad if true. Proper artist.

Went to bed proper sad about this last night.

Wife was out at the theatre with a friend and I sat listening to Colour of Spring, which has not just resurfaced in my world on hearing the death of its writer, but has been a constant companion soundtrack since my A level years.  Amid all that crap in the mid 80s there were some proper gems. That album is front and centre, with Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout somewhere alongside and some of the stuff by the Waterboys in there too.

I absolutely adored his music. The lyric recognised an imperfect world but was reassuring to a teenager because it wasn't negative. Just assuring. And the music was, well, musically accomplished.  The production values were strong but the musicianship and writing was stronger.  There's a rich tapestry of sounds and techniques unlike so much music of the era.  That is why it has stood the test of time.  good music survives.

I never liked TT as a pop outfit, too many synths, all a bit arch. But they sound much better now. The later records though, and his solo record, are sublime. He was that rare artist in pop; he said what he had to say and didn’t just produce for the sake of it, as so many of his peers utterly failed to do. Less is so much more.
