stupid fucking "intelligence" agencies could make themselves useful

why do they not infiltrate the fossil fuel industry, find out about ball internal goings-on and acquire power within these companies so as to transform them into renewable energy corporations

before you all laugh, there is such a company, they are called Orsted, formerly Dong (Danish oil & natural gas), it is held 51% by the state of denmark, very profitable has roughly a 6 billion turnover and owns 25% of all offshore wind farms world wide. they have reduced the fossil fuel based part of the business as much as they can and now merely deal with gas on the spot market, no more oil. yet they are most profitable selling electricity. I once interviewed with them

why can't shell, total, BP etc not go the same way? produce hydrogen fuel instead of petrol, who said there is no money to be made. ah yes cos that would demand some flexibility and new thinking, why do that when the cash flow is so nice

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT THE FINANCIAL INTERESTS OF THE FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY IS THREATENING US ALL?

why let the interests of few people prevail over the interests of all mankind? if I was in charge I'd make them do as I say, why have my children toasted just because of some CEO w**kers and top executives who can not let go of the money

I mean you know how people are when they see big money, they never let go, they'd rather die. so die then, motherfooker. YOU go, not my children

that is what they SAY

I have worked in renewables and I now the market , your statement is not true

e.g. BP wound up its solar operation, it does not exist.

give me one example of a renewable energy portfolio owned by an oil/fossil fuel co.

Equinor (formerly Statoil) -

https://www.equinor.com/en/what-we-do/new-energy-solutions.html

They already own the Dudgeon wind farm field off Norfolk and are likely to win Doggerbank which will be the largest offshore windfarm in the UK. They've developed Hywind which is probably the biggest technological breakthrough in windfarm technology this century and have various other projects across Europe as well as in New York and Japan.

HTH

L.O.L.  @BP:

We have interests in 11 sites in eight states in the US with a net generating capacity of more than 1000MW, making BP one of the top wind energy producers in the country.

a) top producer? bullshit

b) figures really meager, esp compared to the role BP plays in fossil fuel.

it's just make up and for the show, no real interest in renewables

"Lightsource BP is a global market leader in the development, acquisition and long-term management of large-scale solar projects and smart energy solutions. Our projects generate competitively-priced, dependable, clean energy for businesses and communities."

"Track record of 1.3GW+ developed in-house"

^that's fook all esp given it's BP, certainly not global market leader. look I have worked in solar and wind, I know the market and the players. I used to be legal counsel of a German company with 40 admin employees which has installed 1.6 GW since 2007

I have worked in renewables and I now (sic) the market

followed by

OK you gave one example which was under my radar

ah.

It is true that the Majors own a relatively small portion of the renewable market (i'd say circa 5% at most) but that is growing.

BP wound up BP solar and now has this new operation lightsource, it's very new

oh and 6 GW in the pipeline - everybody puts that on their website. whether it's true is an entirely different question

My take is also that a lot of the majors will get into the market through acquisition. They'll wait for renewable companies to develop technology which will increase the margins (or regulatory change which hits fossils) and then just gobble up some of the mid sized players in the field. A lot of the majors are positioning themselves for this already by buying small stakes in a wide range of companies.

Why do people who think the major oil companies are irredeemably evil want them to be controlling players in the renewables market?

If they're failing to invest in renewable power that seems like an opportunity to supplant them with newer/better companies.

The converse is what really matters... ...the investigation by intelligence agencies and innocent peaceful climate change protestors.

The FBI has an open anti-terrorism investigation of 350.org, a climate activism group founded by Bill McKibben who says: "Trying to deal with the greatest crisis humans have stumbled into shouldn’t require being subjected to government surveillance... ...But when much of our government acts as a subsidiary of the fossil fuel industry, it may be par for the course".

"HTF is this an intelligence agencies issue?  You think Mossad should infiltrate BP and make them more enviro focused?"

the Mossad is certainly not making anyone more enviro focussed, weapons focussed more like

but yeah I think FBI should infiltrate american companies, mi5 should infiltrate BP and make them more enviro focussed, the French infiltrate total, etc

these companies are so huge and powerful, regular political means do not seem sufficient to make them act responsibly

If governments want to influence where these companies make their money the mechanism already exists through taxation......

I'm not sure they need a boardroom coup.

Also mega heh @ some ex military civil servant being able to just join a multinational and get to a position of influence any time soon.

Why not just revert to a Soviet command economy, then the State can control exactly what big business is up to?

Then the intelligence agencies would be free to keep tabs on the rest of us rather than wasting time studying for their MBAs or whatever.

Sounds great.

nationalising everything to do with fossil fuel is another thought

There are already lots of national oil companies. Typically the countries also set up a national renewables company

see Petrobras vs Electrobras for more details.

yeah or the aforementioned Orsted formerly danish natural oil and gas

you cannot hope that big corporates act responsibly, left to their own devices. I mean you can hope, but that's not good enough, nothing you can bet your future on
