Really weird show, cant work out if I like it or not...
Has the trademark Detectorists very domestic slow pace and whimsy but combines it with a big dose of magical realism. Very odd, certainly original.
Had a bout of insomnia last night and it was just the thing - chucklesome, slow, classy writing and acting, a laugh out loud at the DIY store (buckets), and the strangeness of the emerging tale.
Caught the last 15 mins of the first episode on telly last night and was very intrigued, planning on catching up properly asap.
I binged it yesterday - enjoyed it a lot.
Will probably benefit from rewatching, as Detectorists does.
Enjoyed the first two episodes, just full of nice touches. I liked the reference to a TV show called Celebrity Barrel Scraping.
Reminded me of my all time favourite imaginary TV format - Celebrity Shit Bucket with Roger Mellie
Also the names on the police officers' badges.
Finished it last night, its not constantly laugh out funny, but then I never found the Detectorists massively funny. It does however have gentle wit, very observant on character types with a truly odd plot thrown in. Would recommend overall.
I was led to believe the Crooks character was going to be a grown up Gareth from the Office, but is played with a bit more subtlety than that and is actually a pretty believable frustrated stolid retail manager dealing with completely uninterested staff.

The Father Christmas thing did make me smile.
Interesting, I thought that was taking things too far into absurdity and detracted from the realism that contrasted nicely with the magical elements.
Watched it (first two episodes so far) purely because of Michael Palin, but loved it. I did LOL at the blue buckets and ‘Celebrity Barrel Scraping’
Now need to check out the Detectorists.

You are in for a treat. One of few shows I wish I could watch for the first time again.
Only watched the first episode so far (did the same as GA and caught 15 mins when live, because the News and Newsnight was too depressing and went back on iPlayer), but it's identifiably Mackenzie Crook after Detectorists. Looking forward to the rest. The music is good as well.
Detectorists is one of the best / most original things in a long time that isn't a big-budget series and all the better for it.
It's very good so far (ep one). Nice cameo from dennis pennis

Liked the first series but thought it had really lost it by the third series, makes me think that Small Prophets shouldn’t actually continue for too long
And that theme tune made me want to pull my ears off
You should invest in one of those tellys with a mute button
