Shawshank Redemption

Watched this again for first time in about twenty years- it stands up well compared to many 90s films   Feels like it was made 20 years earlier than it was - thats a compliment.

It's truly magnificent.  My fav ever film.

Agree with Face, so glad Frank Darabont shot the final scene after the producer and studio preview audiences gave a thumbs down to the scene of Red just leaving in the bus.

It deserved many Oscars, incl Thomas Newman's wonderful score.

It's a great film and a credit to SK's ability as a short story writer (as a rule, I h7 short stories, but King is a notable exception).

Some stiff competition with Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction

Not only did it no win any oscars it was a box office flop on first release.  I think perhaps it would have been viewed as old fashioned at the time, although now that seems a virtue.

Shawshank was I think one of the few films to win a proper cult following from rentals.

lol at PP!

I disagree about the ending of TSR.  The story is about hope and slapping on a definitive happy ending takes away the power of hope

short story writers - the master is Annie Proulx imo.

Brokeback Mountain is another amazing film - which is actually quite long - based on a short story. No sloppy endings here.

I meant shawshank.  The bromance in brokeback need not be explained

Top 5 on all-time list for me in terms of films, alongside Godfather I, Interstellar, Apocalypse Now and Raging Bull. Pulp Fiction and Blade Runner knocking around in there too

I think I probably agree with that - seeing Red sitting on the bus having found the note under the tree would have been a better ending I think.  But its a minor quibble and I can see why they wanted to show the bright blue pacific after 2 hours plus of grey prison walls...

It's 5 of the following 6 depending on mood/given day for me:

The Martian

The Big Short

Good Will Hunting

Inception

Interstellar

Inglorious Basterds

One of the final scenes, where Red gets dropped off in Buxton and searches for the Shawshank tree - Wikipedia and Andy's hidden box, is so brilliant.

Full of emotion, and you sense Red's trepidation of  can he find it, and what he may find in it if he does.

After that, just leaving the bloke on the bus would have been a miserable ending.

of course it wouldn't!

he's found the box and is on his way...

Kimmy thinks the ending on se7en was wrong too

My Top 5 films for re-watching probably seen them all ten times at least over the years...

Trading Places

Whitnail & I

The Sting

Goodfellas

Rosemarys Baby

ooh, some people don't like being disagreed with eh. dear me

I don't mind being disagreed with.  as long as the person concedes they are wrong.

I like Shawshank but don’t get why it is so revered. It’s more a series of vignettes linked by an overarching storyline which I get is a strength to some but to me disguises that there isn’t enough of a story to fill a film. Then again I think the Porridge movie is better…

Best ending? City Lights. IYKYK.

Heh at wang!

I also love cinema paradiso, and the ending with the film canister reel

I watched it with my sister’s daughter who was googling the story throughout and instead of being uplifted at the end told me that in the book they were both guilty of the murders. Great!

Same kid also googled the 6th sense and got the twist spoiled half way through.

Teenagers!
