The saviour of Western Democracy

Western democracy appeared to be in terminal crisis until Boris's thumping election win:

1. America has an insane clown president who is about to be impeached, and the frontrunner to replace him is a corrupt geriatric machine politician.

2. France is perennially on fire/on strike, and has an unpopular technocrat as President.

3. Italy has been stumbling from crisis to crisis and has had a number of appointed (as opposed to elected) Prime Ministers

4. Spain has been unable to form a stable government.

5. Brazil and the Philippines have elected authoritarian strong men with scant regard for civil liberties, or basic human decency.

Extremist parties of the right and left have been on the rise across Europe and the World, as voters reject the dry technocracy and the negative consequences to their lives of global free trade, free movement of people and ever increasing immigration from the South.

Britain itself flirted with a technocrat coup, as Members of Parliament tore up their manifesto pledges and tried to manoeuvre a second referendum.

And then, on Friday 13th December:

BOOM!

Out of the combination of the rapacious ambition of a floppy-haired unprincipled Etonian narcissist and the common sense of Workington Man, the British people have managed to create a centre-right populist movement, that rejects global technocracy, woke identity politics and racist extremism all in one go.

Without wishing to get all Hegelian, this election result has the potential to assume World-Historical significance: we in Britain have the chance, over the next five years, to show that you can forge a moderate, popular politics and a successful economy, with some restrictions on trade and immigration to protect the working class which can then stand as a model for other embattled democracies.

Seriously though, Boris and this Conservative government right now has got to be the most important thing happening in democracy anywhere in the world - that almost certainly speaks to the poverty of the competition, but that is the point I am trying, however ineptly, to make.

By the way, the saviour in the title is not (just) Boris, it is the combination of a ruthless political machine (2 x Mayor of London, Vote Leave Referendum, and now an 80 seat majority) and the common sense of Northern, Midland and Welsh white working class people.

Spain is in a not dissimilar position. The PP turned Right too late, as Vox had already occupied that position but, once they did, they also lost the Liberal vote. It was just bad timing. People will come to their sense. I predict another election next year to break the deadlock and the PP will boss it.

what was the point? Now I'm really lost:

In summary

Democracy is in crisis across the globe because political elites have lost touch with the electorate's concerns. Almost all populists have responded by going to the hard left or right. Workington man and Boris have betwen them  pulled off the impossible by creating a populist centrist movement that responds to ordinary people's concerns about globalisation.

If we can make it work, it provides a model for other democracies to copy.

I love the way you sneer at other countries for their rise in extremism, apparently in ignorance of the fact that the Tory party is now overrun by extremists and the difference between the UK and other European countries is that they flirt with far right parties whereas we have elected one with a huge majority.

THREE CHEERS FOR OUR WHITE SAVIOURS!!

"I love the way you sneer at other countries for their rise in extremism, apparently in ignorance of the fact that the Tory party is now overrun by extremists"

1. I am not sneering. I don't laugh or sneer at other democracies struggles or flirtations with thugs like Duterte, Bolsanaro, or Trump. I am concerned for them, and for us, because it doesn't bode well for any of us if those are the kind of people that get elected.

2. The Tory party is its not overrun by extremists NOW. It WAS at the mercy of an extremist faction until Friday, but they are now a complete irrelevance as they have been diluted by an influx of sensible grounded Northerners.

I hope you are right that this government is (a) centrist and (b) will respond to ordinary people's concerns about globalisation

That makes two of us.

If this doesn't work, then it's back to the Corbyn's/McDonnell's/Bolsanaro's/Salvini's of this world, and the days will go down in the West, into shadow.

THREE CHEERS FOR OUR WHITE SAVIOURS!!

Well, it is at least a little ironic that the very electorate that has been demonised by metropolitan liberal elites for the last 3 1/2 years had to come to the rescue of Britain's Jews.

The Tory party is its not overrun by extremists NOW.

The home secretary openly wants to bring back hanging and the prime minister deliberately exploits the racist vote to increase his own popularity. Oh, and he doesn't give a shit about the rule of law, tried to override the wishes of parliament and purged everyone who was concerned about his behaviour from his party.

HTH.

Well, it is at least a little ironic that the very electorate that has been demonised by metropolitan liberal elites for the last 3 1/2 years had to come to the rescue of Britain's Jews.

As if the Brexit nut jobs give a shit about Jewish people.

HD - not bothered about the union? No cause for concern?

The Union will be fine. The sky won't fall in on 1st February 2020 with Brexit and long overdue money will start to be spent on small scale infrastructure projects just south of the Border. By the time that the 2021 Scottish elections come round, I expect the Conservatives to be well placed to say to the Scottish Electorate;

"I know you find it difficult to conceive of yourself voting Conservative, but that's exactly what the people of Bolsover, Redcar, and Workington thought. And now they've got new schools/train services/hospitals/urban regeneration. Meanwhile what exactly has Nicola "Braveheart" Sturgeon done for you? Vote Conservative"

They don't even need to win a majority in Scotland. Just do a few percentage points better than last time (and better than the GE) and that will be that.

I know you find it difficult to conceive of yourself voting Conservative, but that's exactly what the people of Bolsover, Redcar, and Workington thought. And now they've got new schools/train services/hospitals/urban regeneration.

Heh!

Before 2021, you say?

Even a competent government which wasn't fully occupied trying to deliver a pointless Brexit wouldn't be able to do much for the people of Workington and Redcar before 2021.

A VERY GOOD IDEA!

ONE NATION CONSERVATIVE BRAVE BORIS SHOULD MAKE IT CLEAR THAT CONTINUED OR INCREASED LEVELS OF PUBLIC SPENDING IS CONTINGENT ON CONSTITUENCIES VOTING CONSERVATIVE!

HEH

Hehehe

heh

*sreportmei’mracist*

Someone with spreadsheet copy/pasta this please and remind me in 2 years time?

World historical significance? Heh. No.

Five years to forge a successful economy post Brexit. Heh. No.

Moderate popular politics? Heh. No, m7, the two do not go together anymore. The moderation is only the result of opposition.

'Some' restrictions on trade. HEH

Some restrictions on immigration to protect the work class. GTFO. No m7. There's not enough glitter in the world for this turd.

Stand as a model for other embattled democracies. HEH. No. Britain is the laughing stock of much of the democratic world. Overall, there is more world peace now than 30 years ago. The countries you mention are the odd ones out. You should be ashamed that you are mentioned or considered as part of that group. Britain is back enroute to becoming the sick man of Europe again.

Aaaaah, that was fun. I somehow feel the need for a cigarette right now. Let's do it again sometime, eh?

Seriously though, Boris and this Conservative government right now has got to be the most important thing happening in democracy anywhere in the world - that almost certainly speaks to the poverty of the competition, but that is the point I am trying, however ineptly, to make.

It's not even the most important thing (for democracy) in Europe.  Sanna Marin and her coalition in Finland is a much more interesting development than Britain yet again electing an Old Etonian.

hotnow: do you mean by swaffling that HD is showing us his limp pencil dick, by trying to wave the tip around, whilst biting his tongue and holding his Xmas sweater up with his double chin? If so, I fully agree.

I think Sanna Marin is going to be 'interesting' in the way that the Children's  Crusade was interesting - a bloodbath of of the naive.

Putin and Trump will devour them (if they last longer than 6 months which seems unlikely)

M7:

- nobody but the Dutch circa 2005 really take that word seriously

- there is ZERO chance that HD gets his pencil dick anywhere near another human being as he can't even get it to stick out past his gut in erect state, let alone semi-erect enough for it to be a meaningful swaffle.

- Here, take this. You got cum on your face.

Scots are canny.

MacGregor:  I wanna gae mehr from the English

Campbell:  So geht them to want us to stick around

MacGregor: How? They know we despise them

Campbell: Vote to keep them in the EU, then they are stuck with us

MacGregor:  But they wanna Brexit.

Campbell:  Thas why we’re all voting SNP. Because we don’t want independence. Let’s keep sucking on that Barnet teat
