Meanwhile, the Tories have managed 4 women, one of whom is black, and a man of Indian background.

Of course just 2 of those women stood in a GE and only 1 did well. Perhaps Labour's skill, is reflecting the regressive nature of our society right back at us.

The Labour failure to elect a female leader is quite remarkable, especially when you look at the quality of some of the male leaders in recent years.

That said I dont think anyone would question that the Tory party is more in thrall to establishment white men than the other main parties (save perhaps Reform) and having female and ethnic minority leaders is something of a fig leaf for that.

The rights of ethnic minorities and women are definitely something that Risky cares deeply about

This has been the trope since forever, but it comes across as just a convenient excuse. Fact is the Conservatives have been comfortable having a woman at the top since 1975. 50 years later, the 'progressive party' still are not.

Disraeli and Miliband were both Jewish, but both non practicing I think.

Yes by "remarkable" as I thought would have been obvious, I meant it is a criticism.  I stand by my belief that the Tories have been more inclined to have female and ethnic minority leaders as a fig leaf for the extremely established interests that run the party and in whose interests the party is run. 

Let's give them credit for it. My mums local constituency had Alan Duncan as their MP years ( decades) ago. I am certainly no tory but was impressed with the way it seemed a complete nothingburger to both the local party and what was a solid 20K tory majority that he was gay.

Obviously the said constituancy is heading to Reform now.

On the face of it, its odd but is the Labour Party more institutionally racist, sexist and homophobic than the tory party?

T think that was an outlier as my local party some years ago attempted to deselect an MP who left his wife for a man.

You can safely ignore riskers on this sort of topic as he's in thrall to a man who hisses at Jews and is frit to death of people speaking foreign on a bus.

I dont think electing a string of leaders can be described as a fig leaf, if it was one maybe but there is quite an impressive diverse range of tory leaders and pms.

 

Dizzy was brought up low Anglican, his dad renounced Judaism when the future earl was a kid.  Wasn't particularly religious, especially by the Gladstonian self-flagellation standards of the time.

Labour - do as I say not as I do. 

For the second time I am not defending Labour, I think their record on this is lamentable.

 

The Labour party has in fact in my life time generally been far more diverse in both its MPs and its cabinet/shadow cabinet than the Tories,  It  has just not reflected it in the top job for some reason.  Once again, I dont defend this, it is not acceptable.

Labour is a party of the working class, blue collar, unionised workers, many of whose views of women, gays and ethnic minorities are not that enlightened so maybe it’s not a surprise.

 

Labour is both racist and misogynistic to it's very core.

Shame on anyone who supports it.

since the 90s  most female MPs  elected > Labour

current MPs - 64 openly gay/LBQT - most of whom are labour

They just havent given a women the top job, and nor shoudl they, unless they are the best person for the job. BE VERY careful here #angryange

Isn't she the ONLY black women in a sea of white men with bald head's, glasses and expensive blue suits on their benches (how hideously fooking dull!).  She is truly incompetent, irrelevant and vile all rolled into one big massive loser mess.  

Who is the "other" white man in charge?  There is not a leadership race yet.

Labour has far more women in the cabinet and as old Roger smellie says they just haven't allowed a women to get the big job - this will be for Emily Thornberry at some point.

 

 

One thing she certainly isn’t is incompetent.

About 1/3 of the shadow cabinet are women, and there's a black man (James Cleverly). More women in the government's cabinet though, tbf.

I'm not American so the US defined wokewashing by pretending the Tories are somehow not utterly wedded to only installing an English PM is a totally lost on me
