News story about exams to be a solicitor

I’m not a lawyer but will definitely be taking the SQE1 to boss all you properly qualified losers ;)

Good idea.

It's a job for which you don't need a degree and the existing entry requirements are such that they favour those with greater financial means over those with lesser financial means.

You need a degree or equivalent to sit part 1, so no different to the PgDL jokers currently missing the legal point in firms around the country. You just don't have to hand over £10k to the failed lawyers teaching at BPP/UoL for the privilege.

It could mean they will have more opportunity to chance their arm as:

  • not tied to a 2 year training contract
  • Don't have to stump up £30k plus to get a non-law graduate through PgDL and LPC, thereby having more incentive to pick guaranteed "winners"

So instead of a basically guaranteed circa £2m to get 20 trainees from law school to qualification, you could recruit a bigger pool and let people go as it becomes clear they are not going to cut the mustard, dangling the carrot of a qualified solicitor at SuperTopLawFirm with associated wage packet.
