boom

How unpleasant for those caught up in it

was it known that it would be going up, woo?
I broadly agree with your sentiment when there is a known risk that a mountain is rumbling and thrill seekers ought to keep away.

ahh then wot woo sed

those nuts deserve that. The same thrill seekers scale the active mountains in indonesia and then complain about lack of health and safety.

Think there's a difference between people who were on the lip of the crater and those who were just on a boat tour standing down by the shore.

One or two of those at the crater may have been studying the volcano to try and improve eruption prediction to help save lives.

most volcanology in terms of hazard prediction is done by remote sensing now (satellite measurement of cone dynamics) rather than cheeky chappies leaning over the lip thinking "gosh that looks a bit erupty don't you think?"

Nowadays you get a few days of swelling of the softer magma cap in the cone or on a weakness son the side of the cinder cone as pressure builds. Mt St Helens time lapse photos of the 80s taught them this so now they have satellite analysis as regular evaluation of the dynamic plus other things (remote seismometers in situ etc).

Apparently everyone who goes is told all the previous eruptions, that it is very very live and that there is no warning if it goes again, and obviously asked to sign a detailed waiver.  So the thrill that it is risky is why they go.

So, while it's horrid to be burned to death, zero fooks given.  See also people who climb with no ropes.  Oopsie, never mind.

A person I knew vaguely from law school went adventuring on his qualification leave witth a chum and ended up falling down a dormant crater somewhere in south America.  They were found some weeks later...

Very sad.

sailo - mutters is largely right. the presence of a local weirdo sitting atop a volcano head is simply on behalf of a local university which wants to conduct and collate its own database for predictive assessment seismic activities. they are of course taking chances with their PhD students' lives but the money for these projects is phenomenal - relatively (compared to the other research areas unless it is genome guff or creating half man/machine).

A fair few of the Japanese universities do this.

Bloke I knew vaguely from law school went in a data room and hasn't been since.

The only thing they found they've found is an occasional e-mail or whatsapp saying they can't make drinks.

But, oooooooooooooooooooooooh, hang on:

We also have:

" How unpleasant for those caught up in it "

So that negates and completely excuses the "boom" comment that came before it.

No LOLs there then.

Classic.

Ta again, Laz.

This from Mutters:

"Nowadays you get a few days of swelling of the softer magma cap in the cone or on a weakness son the side of the cinder cone as pressure builds. "

I'm not sure he was talking about volcanoes.

I worked at the same firm as the chap Wang mentions and it was indeed very sad, he was a lovely bloke

I didn’t even know New Zealand had an active volcano :(

It doesn’t need “excusing”, but if it did, yes it would, HTH.
