Saw two movies this weekend:
- Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts - a bit of a mess of a movie. I saw the first one and yet still couldn't quite follow who's who. Not enough fantastic beasts; too much Johnny Depp.
- Shoplifters - Japanese movie, winner of Palme d'Or. Amazing movie. Very subtle hints dropped along the way that things aren't quite what they seem, and when the truth is revealed, rather than detracting with shock value, it reinforces the themes the movie is exploring all along. There is a scene towards the end with a character not saying anything, just stubbornly brushing tears away from her eyes for a full minute. The entire audience was mesmerized--no coughing, no fidgeting--we were in total silence.

I have read good reviews of Shoplifters and it's on my list.
Love The Red Shoes, one of my favourite all time films.

I echo what you said about Fantastic Beasts, I am obsessed with the Potter Universe yet find it very very hard to follow
Plus, he was being taken to Europe to pay for his crimes yet gets there and just stomps about Paris freely.
Jude Law was lovely though, I almost forget what an awful shagger he used to be
