MC trainee describes going into work Tuesday morning and not going home until Sunday

Having worked in excess of 120 hours with just a few hours sleep in the firm's sleeping pod . Jesus Christ why do these people do it ? Anyone you know had a similar experience?

it's the dark art of making relativey intelligent people d relatively daft things

same with intelligence agencies - you have got to be a muppet to sign up there

But still , don't they ever stop to think WHY if they are so bright ? Not even Analysts in bulge bracket investment banks do that and their earning potential out strips that of a solicitor ?

no

because the measure of brightness is being able to repeat things and learning by rote rather than say solving a real world problem

That's a really extreme example and fairly rare but it does happen.

People do it because they are told that is what they need to do and lawyers tend to be good little boys and girls so they do what they are told.

The shame of it is that there is relatively little need for all that makework.  Before word processing, quite large deals used to be done in 30 sheets of A4.

Some of the added detail is required to address financial regulation and the mass of turgid statute we create every year.  But most of it is just slicing and dicing smallish risks that don't really need addressing that way.

Money.

These people are semi-skilled pen pushers, yet after two years of bundling docs and learning a bit of jargon, they'll be commanding salaries four times the national average, with the unusual luxury of enjoying substantial pay rises year on year after that.
