Stixta, you need to watch it from the off, otherwise binging will fry your brain, its so nuanced and complex. I did what you suggest the first series, and couldn't follow it.
obvs there’s going to be a reveal of some sort about Hastings but it would make an awful lot of what’s gone before look unconvincing and be a totally obvs reveal anyway.

@ again, you may be right, but as you say there has to be a big reveal or incident involving Hastings. Dunbar himself said in a recent interview, no actor can be sure how long they will be cast, as most dissapear eventually. Parhaps he was hinting.
But he's skint, homeless, about to divorce, and wasn't there a suggestion he likes a gamble also. And he was about to embark on an affair.
i am expecting that the scouse UCO will turn out to have not so much gone rogue, rather that he is a rotten baddie from the outset, a plant within his investigative unit, to deliberately get himself embedded with the OCG to help it forward.

did you see the face of Hastings when he was told the UCO was a male. They thought it was a woman , and Alison Powell said female UCO. So I reckon there are two of them
I think the male UCO has probably been inserted in order to find some more bent coppers and they want it to be known that the he's gone rogue so the bent coppers will take him under their wing.

It's also FAR too obvious and undermines all Jed M has done in previous series and continues his complete dumbing down a la The Bodyguard (rubbish - no twists).
A UCO going rogue hasn't been done yet so I think it's that.
Just rewatched every (all 4) series on Iplayer. 2 and 3 still the best IMHO.
