Has anyone self employed ever done this?
I have a friend who has been called up and has told me that the most he will be offered in terms of financial support as a self employed person is about £65/day if he serves for up to 10 days and £130 per day thereafter.
The first 10 days isn't even the NMW.
This seems ridiculous, if true.
"It's basic civic duty. Like paying taxes imo."
"My view is that if you want the benefits of freelancing , you take the downsides too. The request for fairness is bogus in my view. I can see why people will take a different view while they have friends and relatives who have lost out"

Just write and explain why you don't want to do the j service. I did (they picked a start time I couldn't possibly manage with doing the school run, and I'm the only one in the household who can do the school run) and they wrote back saying OK fine then.
Two colleagues called up recently and both successfuly said no due to impact on the tiny charity we all work at. etc.
The criteria, payments et caround self employed people clearly need looking at.
i just wandered up to the nice lady at the front desk on day 1 and said I'm awfully sorry but i can't do more than 2 weeks and she said that wouldn't be a problem.
started monday pm, finished on the friday, just inside the 2 weeks. perfect.
I have done it twice, both times they asked for volunteers to be considered for trials longer than 10 days. Both times there were far more volunteers than they needed. It really is incredibly unlikely you would be made to do more than 10 days if it caused financial hardship.
