My god...

Feckin' joking, aren't you?

That song is amazing on so many levels.

A lot of Pulp's lyrics are rather dark when you listen to them carefully.

It reads like an old country and western lyric.

Is it really Pulp?

Oh, so what should you do?
Should you stop being you?
Just to be how he wants you?
Oh, say you'll visit your mum,
Then tell me that you'll come,
And meet me in the afternoon.

He's got your heart,
He's got control.
You might as well know.

I know you're never going to be with me,
But if you try sometimes then maybe,
You could get it right first time.

I realize that you'll never leave him,
But every now and then in the evening.
You could get it right first time.

I ❤️ Pulp so much

Sails, the John Peel sessions version of Common People is the most darkly brilliant protest song. The man is a genius. (the whole Peel sessions album is worth listening to repeatedly)

I was thinking of the Gin Blossoms.

I was countin' change for a cab ride back to bed
She looked to me through the cold night air
And thoughts of you kicked off inside my head
Well she was tall hair dark as midnight
She had a way just like you do
To make me feel just like a woman should
You can't call it cheatin'
Cause she reminds me of you.

What Tom said about Pulp being overrated tho.

Just... no.

OK, so, His n Hers is an amazing album. Truly brilliant.

What followed, after they got all famous and that, was less good, I will admit, but for that one album: Wow.

Also wow in that literally no one has thought about the Gin Blossoms since about 2002. Good work there. And while we're on this lyrical theme, I'd like to refer you all to The Offspring v Self-Esteem [1994] AllER 666:

"Now I'll relate this little bit:
It happens more than I'd like to admit.
Late at night she knocks on my door,
She's drunk again and looking to score.
Now I know I should say no, but
It's kind of hard when she's ready to go.
I may be dumb,
But I'm not a dweeb,
I'm just a sucker with no self-esteem"
