Salary + your expectations x your other half's expectations less outgoings / mortgage + postcode x what your peers are doing  / happiness (not forgetting school fees) + London weighting (where applicable) + or - sector et voila!

in all seriousness, this can be a gap in the salary surveys that RCs do. obviously it's highly variable depending on seniority, size & age of firm, and industry.
