Haggling in John Lewis

Have you ever successfully done this? I am going to buy a sofa and people keep saying I should try but it feels so cringe.

I’m crap at haggling in retail for actual discounts but I usually get them to throw in something free as an extra.  Maybe ask for a couple of free cushions or something?  That’s just a little cheeky rather than a full on haggle.

In my experience of JL for large items its the delivery when things go wrong.

free delivery on things is a problem, easier to get satisfaction when you’re paying for it (fnaar).

I’ve had money off before.

The most recent example is that I bought an ex display desk that had a couple of knocks of the sort it would pick up in 30 seconds active use at home.

I got the already reduced price reduced even more.

Just find the right person and be polite.

I've just got 20% off a new heating system by buying all the parts from a wholesaler at the same rate my plumber would get rather than buying from the manufacturer.  Just got my plumber to explain that I'd be buying the bits for him to fit so could I have the same discount they normally give him.
