I saw Babette’s Feast mentioned somewhere recently - that’s a really great film.
An old French film about a family that live on a working barge in ?c.early 1900s…. anyone?
Antonia (Antonia’s Line in English) is amazing and probably influenced my views of feminism hugely. Moved my to tears as a teenager in parts. Shocking, moving, funny, thought-provoking, sexy - it has everything.
Some to look up here, also I'd add The Hunt - there are lots of films called that, I mean the Madds Mikkelson one. Another of his that's good is After the Wedding.
I'm not scared, excellent Italian film.
36 recommended above is a brilliant film. I like old Daniel Auteuill thrillers generally. Also in French, Pour Elle is a great watch. I think it had a bad US remake, avoid that. Special Forces in French/English.

Didn't see her again.
Raise the Red Lantern and the Colour of Paradise are great shouts.

In the Mood for Love
The Leapord
Oldboy
Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master, Fist of Fury, 36th Chamber of Shaolin.

Used to watch random films at the BFI - a lot of gems, some awful pretentious cack.
Fan of Gaspar Noé's other output (if Irréversible is up your street).
Love, Enter the Void, and Climax are all pretty memorable in their own ways.
Heimat
The tin drum
Aguirre der zorn gottes
The grandmaster
Seven samurai
L'Atalante
Les enfants du Paradis
Oldboy
El espíritu de la colmena
Los cronocrímenes
Tous les matins du monde
Heimat, Les enfants du Paradis and Los cronocrímenes particularly being films that I think of quite a lot, actually.
@ Oldgit - I remember watching Le boucher in the 70s. My recollection is of drops of blood on bread - is that right?
Minkie have you read the book? Is a classic apparently.
On the OP, John the Florist and Man On The Sauce, obvs.
Day for Night
Antonia (Antonia’s Line in English) is amazing and probably influenced my views of feminism hugely. Moved my to tears as a teenager in parts. Shocking, moving, funny, thought-provoking, sexy - it has everything.
Probably my favourite film of all time.
Are they a trilogy?

Banlieue 13
Ikiru
Bicycle Thieves
Come and See
Aguirre, the wrath of God

Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain
Films by Jacques Tati:
Mon Oncle/ Playtime/ Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot/ Traffic
Gangster films from the sixties, pre-dating Scorcese and Copolla:
eg; Clan des Siciliens starring Alain Delon, Jean Gabin, Lino Ventura
I need to see more of those with the above cast.
I also haven't seen Un Bout de Souffle and other films of the late Jean-Luc Goddard.
Second vote for:
In the mood for love
Aguirre, The Wrath of God
Trollhunter.
Trying to avoid repeating any that have already been posted:
Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run)
Grosse Mädchen Weinen Nicht (Big Girls Don't Cry)
Die Welle (the Wave)
