Anyone seen the trial they're doing in the west country where several firemen are now also special constables so they can deal with any criminal activity they encounter? Seems sensible to me given that the Fire Brigade is already involved in criminal investigations in relation to arson and the like.

Give them medical training too so they can also be the ambulance service. One-stop shop. And why stop there? If they have enough training and a big enough fire engine, they can offer legal advice, celebrate Mass and sell ice-creams in the summer months.

They already have medical training but not to the extent of their US colleagues who are also the local ambulance service.
