Films to watch with 8 year old son

Too young for Where Eagles Dare? ‘Er Indoors is away at the weekend and want to introduce him to something a step up from his usual fare - recommendations please!

Oooooo what about:

Short Circuit

Flight of the Navigator

Batteries not Included

I watched all of these when I was 8/9, although still slightly traumatised by Flight of the Navigator because that poor kid going home and none of his family being there.

Loopy I have tried to get mine to wathc all of those and they just won't. I've a bad feeling when I finally manage to we'll just see that films have moved on now.

My 6 year old laughed harder at a particular bit in the new Lilo and Stich movie than he has ever laughed at anything in his life (it was just a throwaway gag where he throws a cd out of the window).

Anyone remember DARYL? Massive in the 80s, basically shit apart from the bit where he flies an SR-71

Grey I think that part of it is that kids are used to seeing films in amazing quality and unless the older films have been remastered, they’re not interested. But fook ‘em frankly, if I want to revisit my youth and watch them, the kids can join or go to bed (eg I may start watching something just before their bedtime and I’ll tell them if they want to stay up, they have to watch what I’m watching - and yes they generally choose to stay up).

Also - what about One of Our Dinosaurs are Missing?

I actually refuse to believe that any of these films are rubbish. 🙃

My Neighbour Totoro. Never too soon to get started with Ghibli.

I second this. My 8 year old loved it so much we saw the stage show.

Pleased to see love for transformers from Jim Stan and Sumo.

I think it's one of the best films ever Jim Stan not just animated- in my all time top 10.

Back to Future failed for me when I tried it - as the 'future' in the film was actually 1985 and therefore 40 years ago mine struggled to completely get it. Perhaps wasnt' paying attention.

They LOVED Goonies though

This has been the reaction of ours to some utter classics.  😑

Bullace, I would order up some Airfix kits - Amazon Prime will get a Zero and Wildcat to you tomorrow if you order within the next 7hrs, I'll assume you have glue already - and put Midway (2019) on.

Some great suggestions above.  Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future and Princess Bride being some of the best.

I think Terminator 2 was reclassified to a 12A a couple of years ago, but shoud probably wait a bit.

Jumanji (the Robin Williams original) might go down well, or Matilda or Mrs Doubtfire.

My kids could confidently quote Blackadder and Red Dwarf by 10 or 11, which always made me think they'd been brought up well.

Jumanji actually scarier than perhaps you may remember.

The first of the new Transformers with Megan Fox was memorable described by Charlie Brooker as “like a computer shitting on your face for two hours”

First, let your 8 year old son sit you down and warn you that what you are about to watch (his usual fare) you may find distressing and uncomfortable, as his parent.

If you take this precautionary step, all should be well. However, just in case, do make sure you have sufficient space behind the sofa and you can always sleep with the light on.

Or, if he likes Fred Basset,  Where Beagles Dare

I think the first Transformers is actually decent, but partly that's because I'm old enough to remember the original cartoons / toys.  Having the actual voice of Optimus Prime was a massive nostalgia hit for a nerd like me.  The rest of the films were abominations that should forever burn in hellfire.

Night at the Museum 1 and 2 are good shouts.

Me and #2 watched ghostbusters afterlife last night.  Very enjoyable.  Had never even heard of it!
