Too young for Where Eagles Dare? ‘Er Indoors is away at the weekend and want to introduce him to something a step up from his usual fare - recommendations please!
What’s his usual fare?
Child, obvs
Sorry, that was badly worded. What was the last couple of films he watched?
He loves Jungle Book, Zootropolis, Sing
Last watched Elio….
but I want to introduce him to grown up films!
Dirty Harry, Duel? Back to the Future!
Back to the future is excellent for an 8yr old. Perfect.
The Indiana Jones films
Star Wars series
My nephew saw The Matrix when he was about that age
I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark when I was 9, but it might be a bit of a leap from Sing. Remains one of my favourite films.
Back to the Future should be fun. Presume he’s been through Star Wars etc?
Never to early to start on Where Eagles Dare though.
Indiana Jones good, Ghostbusters good.
the princess bride
I appear to have clashed with Kimmy.
4 closer 2 zootropolis etc u could do the toy stories
or home alone
Home alone is a great shout. Mine love all of the home alone films and there are now loads of them.
Honey I shrunk the kids
Three men and a baby
Life of Brian
Carry On Up Thé Khyber
some good stuff here! done the Toy Story lot - and home alone. Uncle Buck? Not introduced him to Star Wars yet! And - believe it or not - I’ve only ever seen the original film - when it first came out so I would have been 10/11. Back to the Future might be winning so far.
Of the ones mentioned, the Princess Bride or Back to the Future. Ferris Bueller's Day Out was my boys' favourite but maybe at 10 rather than 8.
Brewsters millions.
Dumb a d dumber
Have you done the penguins of Madagascar films?
If nothing else for Bendedict Cucumberpatch's sneaky fart joke "we are the northwind. And nobidy breaks the wind"
Transformers the animated movie from 1986.
One of the best animated movies of all time cliverisky.
ET
Commando. I watched that so many times at his age, the tape broke.
Fantastic Mr Fox
Jurassic Park
Plus the others mentioned above. I would say the goonies but sloth scared the shite out of mine and we had to switch it off.
They enjoyed Twisters too (the new one)
Big and at Christmas Elf.
CARS
If you haven’t done Star Wars yet then get started immediately. He’s having a deprived childhood! Original trilogy first then prequels though.
Back2thefuture worth it too but don’t bother with the sequels. Raiders defo and I would go Holy Grail not LoB (no nudity although slightly awkward spanking scene). My kids started most of these at between 6-8 and loved them all.
My now 10 year old hated the old stuff like Indiana Jones.
He loves the Jurassic Park movies and Godzilla stuff (recent). Paddington movies also great. The new fantastic 4. Crossovers like Lilo & Stitch. The new How to train your dragon.
The Avatar films are his absolute faves though.
My Neighbour Totoro. Never too soon to get started with Ghibli.
My 9 yr old watch the first couple of pink panther films at Christmas and loved them
Ghostbusters is not really 8 year old appropriate
Jurassic park / indiana jones better
The modern ghostbusters are fine, just not very good films.
Jungle Cruise and new Jumanjis are good fun
Honey I shrunk the kids
Jurassic Park
+1
Zulu
You could scar them for life good & early, i.e. The Never Ending Story.
Lego movies
Star Wars
E.T
Minecraft movie
Mrs Doubtfire
Spiderman films
Home Alone
How to Train A Dragon
One of my boys is 8.
Star Wars, definitely.
I want to introduce him to Terminator but apparently it's not "age appropriate". FFS.
Guns of Navarone?
Cheaper by the dozen
Good selection riskylou.
My son is 17 and obsessed with Arnold - even saw him live in 2023 at the Royal Albert Hall. He’s watched every single one of his films!
He has some good and amusing for adults to watch films
Twins
Kindergarten cop
Junior
There is also
Transformers lots of those to see
Once they get to an age where you can take them to see good films it’s so much fun - I’m such a movie lover and have been taking my two to the cinema since they were babies. Sunday afternoons are the best movie days.
I refuse to watch never ending story with mine, or at all.
Tried to find cocoon on streaming service for last movie night but couldn’t.
Such good (and nostalgic!) selections. I think I was around that age when I watched Labyrinth- might be another good one.
Hook is good too.

Good shout for Labyrinth - wonderful cameo by David Bowie
lego Ninjago movie is a good one (all the lego movies are good Dad movies)
what clive said, Transformers 86, very important life lessons in there
the K pop demon hunters movie very good -Sumo terror now wants to be a demon for halloween
the troll hunters stuff on Netflix is very good
mario movie, sonic movies, mincraft movie - he'll have frame of reference for
I wonder if maybe pie rats of the Caribbean stuff might be worth doing
