Fascinating game developer insight

This is an exposé on what caused one of the most anticipated games of the year to somewhat crash and burn.  Fortunately it’s being turned around now and the game is ridiculously fun to play, albeit lacking in content.

The article (which amusingly among the javelin pilot community is always referred to as “The Article”) is pretty long but it hit a nerve with Electronic Arts and BioWare alike who have both been briefing their staff to never talk about it ever again, heh.

Enjoy!

EA is the mother of all shit shows, a really terrible terrible company that makes piss poor pay to win games and throws other firms' IP under the bus

just look at the train wreck they made of Star Wars Battlefront and Titanfall 2 or the hatchet job of command and conquer rivals

Here is the update that will be rolling out this morning (April 8th, 2019).

  • Fixed an issue that was causing loot to drop for javelins other than the one being used.
  • Addressed a number of issues that could occasionally cause Nvidia highlights to crash.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing Elysian Cache items to not appear until completing another activity or restarting the game.
  • The newsfeed will now properly show content again upon launching into the game.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing Ursix and Titans to not spawn as frequently in Freeplay.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause the screen to shake when enabling DLSS and turning off motion blur.
  • Fixed an issue that would sometimes cause players not to be able to interact with Owen, or hear his audio at the end of the Legendary version of the mission “Finding Old Friends”.
  • Titans, Ursix, Luminaries and Fury enemies should no longer disappear when another player starts an Event in Freeplay.

First replies are the best shitposts I’ve seen in a while.  Reddit on anthem is fcking brutal.

As it should be really.  I mean I paid out £80 for the legion of dawn Collector edition, another £10 for the steel book, £20ish for the collectors edition guide and £50 for the artbook limited edition.  And the game was properly broken on launch.  Any other industry these guys could be sued.

Indeed, basically it became cool to hate on EA because they try to monetise games and have bought out some real legacy studios and then lost all the most talented staff during the take over.

Bioware are responsible for some of the best games ever released - baldura gate, ice wind dale, neverwinter nights, mass effect, dragon age.  Also one of my favourite MMOs - Star Wars the old republic. But because of the fifa stuff and the “pay to win” bits that went with it, their name is now dirt.  Shame really but there you go.

”word on the street” has it that EA have decided Anthem is TBTF and are now throwing money, specialist frostbite developers and rehiring old writers to make sure anthem becomes the “Dylan” experience they had originally intended.  We shall see, I suspect that Anthems resurrection will massively delay Dragonage 4.

But if anyone ever tries to play anthem, just the simple act of flying around, cooling off by flying through waterfalls or skimming lakes. Bouncing off the walls of old ruins in jungles and then gunplay, they really are In for something special with this, they now need to push content.  It’s fun and it’s the most beautiful game I’ve ever played, but it needs more content.
