The vote is in parliament today. Here are the candidates, chosen by Angela Merkel and Emannuel Macron:

1. Ursula von der Leyen,

Who do you think has the best shot at winning the vote?

I'm not going to stick my neck out because I think I missed the party political broadcasts and manifesto releases. How has this election passed so quietly? It's an outrage. I'm not sure I'm even registered to vote.

#DeniedMyVote

But I thought they were all saying one of the minnows was going to get it this time, to show how diverse the EU leadership is (and not at all just a Franco-German mouthpiece).

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that it will be some underwhelming, interchangeable, federalist, bureaucratic EU apparatchik who wouldn't know what a democratic vote was if it jumped up and gobbled up his/her arse.

But maybe I'll be proven wrong.

This seems a much better way of deciding a leadership contest than the choosing of the British Prime Minister, which is done by the members of some fruity social club called the conservative party,

"This seems a much better way of deciding a leadership contest than the choosing of the British Prime Minister, which is done by the members of some fruity social club called the conservative party,"

That would be not actually correct.

The Conservative Party used to choose its leader in a smoke-filled room in the Carlton Club, taking advice from the Marquess of Salisbury and a few other bigwigs. It's a private organisation, it can do as it pleases.

Funny this thread does not seem to have all the usual EU flag wavers all over it.....  you know the ones crying that it unfair that only Tries get to choose the next PM...

funny.

I assume this thread is a distended satire of the fact that the election of the EU Commission's President is not directly democratic.. Great point, except of course it isn't and it doesn't need to be, because the Commission is accountable to, and its chief selected by, member state governments that are themselves directly democratically accountable to their populations. It might be preferable to have a directly elected EU head of state (and, as that implies, for the EU to be a state). But it's not necessary.

Ray I added you to the fooking idiot who's posts I should ignore list.

Also comparing the HoL selection with the President of the EU is idiotic.

hth

squiiter.

So... the fact that that role is not directly democratic is made okay by the fact that other parts of this Tower of Babel are also not directly democratic?

fvck this is proper echo chamber stuff isn’t it

no wonder brexters wind themselves into such a frenzy, they just feed off each other without taking a step back and think dispassionately

eh? why do u need that demonstr7ed to u?

it’s a well known fact

everyone, especially brexters, acknowledge that brexit is from the heart, not the head. it’s designed to appeal to our base, tribal, monkey brain

thats what makes it successful and powerful, that’s how it achieved support from 52% of those who voted

if brexit were about dispassionate, rational, unfeeling and realistic arguments, we’d be part of a federal european superstate already. but it’s not, brexit is about shouting at johnny foreigner “you’re not the boss of me” and poking out our bottom lips, irrespective of reality

y do u need that demonstr7ed to u? r u thick?

"no wonder brexters wind themselves into such a frenzy, they just feed off each other without taking a step back and think dispassionately."

Nothing like a nice demonstration of un-self-aware hypocrisy. Thanks for that little insight into your prejudices.

heh

(a) u’ve already responded poorly to that post, so trying again rather loses its zing

(b) accusing me of hypocrisy without any evidence of the same is rather lollably hypocritical when u’ve just demanded laz produce evidence... to then accuse me of lacking self-awareness I can only assume to be an ironic self-deprecating joke, otherwise hypocrisometer will explode
