from my alma mater is doing a tour of London and wants to meet. (No, it's not a humblebrag--they send the email to every alumnus/a they are aware of in London, I'm sure.) Would it be rude of me to just ignore the email? Do I owe them at least a polite no? Or maybe a response along the lines of "You must be confusing me with someone wealthy and generous."

they've all got different brackets but major gifts probably won't get out of bed for <100,000 and frankly would rather get 1,000,000

the category above them are the ones who go looking for entirely new law schools, that kind of thing.

i probably average 2 emails a week from my us undergrad uni, despite having made clear that they wouldn't see another penny from me when they turned down my niece

feel free to ignore it

have to say I disagree with a lot of these comments.

a fewvyears ago i engaged with the fund raisers at my alma mater ( not Oxford or Cambridge) and they worked very hard to inform about the various ways the money would be spent. This led later to me forming a relationship with another London university which i had no cennection to, but i wanted to donate to their medical research. They invited me in to look around, they come to see me every year and when i was partic interested in one project i met the lead researcher. I do not give vast sums, faod.

it is remarkable the extent to which you can direct your donations and engage on a personal level to find out about stuff for really a quite small donation. And they never cold call now either, its a personal email or call from someone with whom i have a relationship with. This is no humblebrag, as i said, its not much money at all, i only post to encourage the rest of you, it is v rewarding!
