DC hotel recommendations?

I'll be traveling to DC for business next month. Staying a couple of nights in Arlington, but will be extending the stay for a Friday night on my own dime (flying back on a Saturday red-eye). Any recommendation for a hotel and things to do for the day (other than monuments and museums)? Thaks.

I've never found a hotel I love in DC.  The Monaco isn't bad.  The Sofitel is ok.  There's a lot of bland corporate places.

DC is really about the monuments and museums.  The Korean war memorial gets me every time.  The botanical gardens are nice.  It's a shame you are missing Sunday brunch.  DC is great for boozy brunches.

The W Hotel is good and has a fantastic rooftop terrace bar overlooking the White House. I used to go to the bar on a regular basis.

In terms of things to do it really depends on what your interests are. I used to live in the area so give me an idea of what you are into and I can give some suggestions.

Tour wise, the Capitol Building and the Library of Congress are good. There is also a Segway tour if you want that amusement. A month is probably not sufficient lead time to book tours of the White House or Pentagon, both of which are good. Bike riding in Rock Creek Park is lovely. Do take some time to walk around the National Mall. Don't know what the African American Museum is like as it had not quite opened when I moved away.

Georgetown is alright and home to one of my favourite cafes and a great Italian, but to be honest it is more pricey, the public transport is crap (it is not on the Metro) and the bars are not amazing. If you want to try obscure bourbon Jack Rose Saloon is great. If beer is what you are after Churchkey on 14th St is the way forward.
