Cori Gauff

Is it safe to assume that her parents are dreadful people? You don't get that good at sport, that young, without sadistic parents

The 15 yr old who is through to the last 16 at Wimbers.

People saying she is the new Serena / Venus (weird how they don't compare her to other young female tennis prodigies, just the black ones)

She seems well adjusted though.

I’m old enough to remember young Graf, Hingis, Seles et al. She’s not the same in terms of seeming to have an overbearing and very pushy parent(s).

Her parents may still be dreadful though.

Loving the unrelenting comparisons to the Williams sisters that would definitely, definitely be made if she wasn't black (including the media bullsh*t about Venus being her hero, despite the fact that Gauff was in nappies the last time Venus won a major, and was a twinkle in her dad's eye when she was consistently good).

Are they not tacitly saying that she has had to overcome certain obstacles in her career that don't apply to white privileged prodigies whose parents can afford to send them to a tennis academy in say Florida?

Her dad was head of sales at some big Pharma company.

Is she competing in the Lawn Tennis or Croquet section of Wimbledon?

Well done to her but what is not said is that the fact a 15 year old girl who should really be playing in the junior competition  can get so far in the tournament is a shocking indictment on the state of women's tennis I am afraid.

I think she's just naturally talented and enjoys it and her parents have done all they can to encourage that. Lots of parents do that in lots of different arenas. They competed to a relatively high level in their sports, so it's fair to say there's some natural athleticism. She seems to really like what she's doing. I don't think they're sadistic. It could be argued that the Williams sisters parents were - they were properly hot housed and had no outside life, and I don't think Gauff has had her life restricted in the same way.

She seems like a well adjusted talented kid and Guy, if 15 year olds were regularly doing this then there'd be questions, but this hasn't happened since 1991, so hardly indicative of an on-going issue in women's tennis. Although British tennis needs to sort itself out, we seem to be unable to achieve decent results.

yes ok, fair enough -  perhaps she will be a the sort of transcendental star women's tennis so badly needs.

At 15 I definitely wasn't going around declaring that I was going to be world number 1 at anything.  Maybe I lack ambition...
