Oh dear. I actually feel a bit sorry for the kids, who genuinely seem to be unaware that their scores were paid for, at least in this version of the scam.

Me too
when you’re young you take your parents’ support for granted. Then there is a transitional phase where you start to strike out and make your own space. You win, lose and draw from time to time, on occasions you really cock that up a bit and learn from error. Then you make choices and start to build a record of your own achievements. There is pride in what you achieve because you know you did that, with no help from others. You’re paddling your own canoe, taking the risks and hoping for the reward.
Then what if you discover a fundamental element of that achievement was contrived ...

I await Lydia’s comments on this story.

Are we genuinely not that bothered that the leader of a US law firm that gives advice to US and UK listed companies is OK with dishonesty that impacts his family, professional reputation and the reputation of the firm he leads? Seriously? Have we come that far?

It’s assumed by most lawyers and all civilians that everyone is crooked and only the stupid people get caught. They just never mention it.

So yes then.
I’ve had quite a lot to do with WFG in DC and in London. There will be one or two good people there who are in some shock at this.
there are many things a lawyer can withstand in terms of impact on reputation and fitness to practice. Two things cannot be overcome though. They are inabilty to keep confidential information confidential, and dishonesty.
I wonder how wide this will go.

Having read the transcript he is turbofvcked but frankly I’d never heard of the firm and he’s based in the states so I wasn’t that arsed about it tbf

Yes, I am bothered, mutters. Hopefully he and all those who have participated in these scams will face the proper consequences.

His biog page seems to have disappeared from willkie.com, transcript from wiretapped line so no it doesn't look rosy for him.

His daughter is probably not best pleased with him if she didn't know about it. If she did, that's another story.

I think the lack of uptake on the revelation was partially because I'd already posted a thread about it further down... I was speculating that it was surely disbar-able.

I'd say America is about as crooked as it comes so this doesn't surprise me. Basically the elite operate a winner takes all attitude except when their insurance company/bank is headed down the Swanny. Even their tax, planning laws etc. seem designed to disadvantage those that can't afford to line the pockets of some pin-striped crook.
Yes in Britain you can buy your kid the leg-up of education, but I tend to think that if they still come out as less intelligent than the competitor from the comp, they'll get binned.
These "poor children" are old enough to know how capable they are. Yes daddy didn't tell them explicitly he'd bribed their way into college, but many sat extended time tests, all lucked out on the day and some presumably started getting info about their role on the bobsleigh team.
The most ridiculous thing about it is that it is a pure status symbol, as they are trustafarians anyway. If Gavin Hastings ever said he went to Cambridge as a sign of intellectual prowess, everyone would laugh.

Having just binge watched Making a Murderer it is hard to disagree with Nanasan.
on that topic, is the wisconsin accent heavily influenced by nordic or dutch immigrants? It's very odd.

Wang judges lawyers like other people judge horses.
Checks their teeth, their shoes, gives them a slap on the rump to see if they’re skittish etc.

Their website contains some predictably fine teeth, but these are unlikely to have been the work of their own DNA.
They also have some people with concerning levels of happiness with their lot. "Hi, I'm Marty and I'm a deal lawyer in New York and hell yeah, I am happy as fook and you must be enjoying how happy I am and that's making me happier still. Yeah! Go Trump. Guns. Yeah"
