Anyone else feeling uncomfortably guiltily relieved

About the election result...

I didnt vote tory, never have and not sure I ever will. Would have voted labour if they had been even feasibly centrist.

I am stuck debating with myself as to whether my relief is a result of the media attack on "Marxist Corbyn" or whether it is well founded. The more I think about it it is well founded.

My hope is that centrist politics will be the focus of both tory and labour parties going forwards. Borris will now want to deliver something to the labour heartlands he has taken over, and has a good chance of really changing the way certain areas vote. And at the same time labour must somehow become more centrist if they want any chance of power in 2025...

When I reflect on this I start to think maybe this result aint so bad. Sure in the short term it looks crap but at least in the long term we might head towards a more gentle politics.

And then, dare I say it, some of Cummings previous statements start to look prophetic and almost well meaning

No because the Tories will fook all the bits of the state that everyone except the genuinely internationally mobile rely upon.

You saved a few k in tax at the cost of everything you need good work.

No but a large majority is better than a small one - Johnson is not ideological and will walk a path that keeps him popular - this will mean sidelining the erg alt right nut jobs because he no longer needs them

your relief is a result of your manipulation by the media

Corbyn as PM would self evidently have been less destructive and damaging that Johnson will be

This wouldn’t change even if Corbyn actually were a Marxist.

all a large majority means is that he can do whatever he wants, whatever that is. The expectation that Johnson will suddenly turn into St Francis of Assisi is laughable. You're probably too young to remember Maggie quoting him ....

unlike Maggie however the man has no sticking power at anything (marriages, jobs) and will probably (like Cameron) get quickly bogged down and bored by just how much hard work being PM involves. Unfortunately that means he'll hand over the grunt work to whoever is willing to do the most sucking up and do it for him. I doubt the tories are going to lurch to the centre as a result.

Since the financial crisis there is no 'centre' which does not involve piling yet more debt on to the children and grandchildren for them to repay

This generation must learn to live within its means and pay its existing debts - austerity!

Linda - I despise Johnson and don’t think he cares about the country but he does like to be liked and will want another term - a hard brexit is catastrophic and he knows it so I believe he will go for a depoliticised softer brexit that will be negotiated behind the scenes that will end up close to regulatory union in effect if not in name - I could of course be wrong but a slim majority dependent on the erg would definitely have been a disaster and would probably have led to deal

probably kidding myself but have to take something positive from this shitshow
