Some cases just catch your interest. This did mine from the start as I know the area well, but having now read the below I defy anyone else not to be all over this
I was also interested in the bit about the JLR being able to trace his movements from satnav data. Big brother is watching us all m99s.. Obv no harm no foul in this case, but... sounds to me more like it belongs in Minority Report 2 tbh.
Other thing about what is for sure a captivating case... you hear "man killed with crossbow", you assume the killer will be some punk teenager or lonely ne'er do well bumping along the bottom of society's fish tank. The accused doesn't seem to fit the profile - he had a career as a therapist, a girlfriend and enough money to buy what was obviously a fairly new Disco. That's a forty grand car, new.
Fascinating. Most interesting for me is that JLR keep a log of when and where you open your boot. What else do they record? Sound data from the hands free phone mic? Camera data? New cars usually have rear parking cameras. Is it all in the 'cloud'? When will dashcams come as standard?
On the upside it's getting very very hard to murder with impunity these days
I was thinking about the JLR point, and I think the statement that they "retained" the date may bey a typo / malapropism. I think the truth may be that their engineers *retrieved* the data from the car's systems, notwithstanding the fire damage. It is however possible that the car uploads, presumably via home wifi, service and maintenance-relevant data but I'm surprised that included satnav logs and the times at which the boot was opened.
He is going to go down longtime because of all the evidence of his planning, premeditating and laying a trap for the poor guy. It genuinely seems like he was sport-hunting.
(I believe laying in wait is typically treated as an aggravting factor in sentencing? Others better placed than me to confirm. If it is, then in some contexts that could be another example of Victorian public school muscular Christianity prejudicing the weak in its design of the justice system. But probably fair enough when u have some guy not only hunting a fellow-creature as if he were game, but also rustling him out of his hide by taking out his satellite dish! Of course the individual concerned is not proven guilty yet but if it does go that way then he is looking at north of 30yrs I reckon.
Is that the motive as the report I've read didn't offer any insight into why he did it?
Top tip for other murderers is don't order something obscure like crossbow bolts where the supplier can give the police a list of just a few people who've bought them in your area in the last ten years.
Some bazza waxing lyrical there with his/her moment in the limelight.
I don't think the practice point is well made tho - a crossbow is piss easy to fire and hit the target. They are also dead simple to make unless u r a halfwit

Sounds like a plot from Bergerac or Midsomer Murders

That stuff about the Land Rover Discovery and the records of the boot opening/closing sounds like it should be in the next Silent Witness series.

I am only surprised that the motor can’t verify DNA samples of the spooge spilt (or not, as the case may be) on the back seat

Also, ludicrous you can be charged with arson for burning a man's car with his obvious consent

not necessarily
my first thought was that he is elderly, his wife has a life limiting disease and handicapped and they own 30 nice juicy acres on the coast
the (shall we bother saying alledged) killer's mate and co-accused was their handyman so would have known stuff about them
i think they killed him so that she wouldn't have a carer and would need to move out
they then come in with an 'generous' friendly face and pressure her into selling at a below market price
