AI not a threat

… says man set to make billions from developing AI products.

Artificial intelligence could lead to extinction, experts warn https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65746524

Ironically just finished reading "I, Robot" yesterday, which ends with AI minds taking over the running of humanity for our own good.

The problem is that there is no real choice, they are gong to be developed and the only thing you can really do is try to keep ahead of the curve.

AI will be dangerous that's for sure, the main issue is not AI becoming somehow evil, but being deliberately programmed with problematic behaviours, purposes and prejudices in the first place.  Its application in weapon systems, particularly autonomous systems, is obvious and has the potential to radically change warfare.

Can someone (cleverer than me) explain step by step how humanity is wiped out by AI.

Creation of bioweapons most probably.  Of course it would need a method of manufacturing and maintaining AI's and their supporting infrastructure first.

1. Give AI complete control over weapons. Nuclear weapons work best, but if you don't have any to hand you can use chemical or biological weapons in a pinch.

2. Wait a microsecond for AI to determine humanity's fate, stirring occasionally.

3. When the world begins to be consumed in fire (or plague), remove from heat.

4. Enjoy with friends the terror of murderous machine-made automatons programmed to wipe out the remnants of humanity.

Minkie - not cleverer than you, but I think the real concern is the development of lethal autonomous weapons, i.e. AI driven weapons that can kill without needing human input. These have already been developed so it’s not a question we have to contend with in some distant future. Proponents say they make us safer by identifying and neutralising threats like missile before they cause damage.

One problem is miniaturised lethal autonomous weapons, like drones. I don’t know if any of these have been deployed, but there is no technical reason why they cannot be developed today.

It is my opinion that anyone who downplays the danger is an idiot.

Relax. AI is NOT that clever.

I asked it what the best Smashing Pumpkins album is the other day.

The response I got was basically what a policitian would say: "They all have merit, judge each separately, etc".

Bollox.

The clear and only answer is Siamese Dream. Anyone, or anything, that does not realise that, and/ or that states that anything after Mellon Collie has any merit whatsoever is clearly sub-normal and poses no threat to anyone.

It's basically a foolproof version of the Voight-Kampff test. And, yes, I just people on this basis as well.

Ah yes, this is the sub-plot of Captain America: Winter Soldier, when Hydra secretly programmed Shield's AI heli-carriers to find and kill all their opponents. So in conclusion, goodies: good; baddies: bad; AI: neutral.
