A&O announces the 24 hour a day job

While the credit crunch might be hitting Jones Day, it doesn't seem to be affecting life at Allen & Overy. Corporate lawyers were sent an email this week reminding them that there is no such thing as a life outside the firm:

Further to our previous email, we would like to clarify a couple of points which were raised on fee earners working from home and how PAs should seek to manage this in terms of communication within the office.

At the recent Corporate AGM, Andrew Ballheimer stated that it is a clear expectation that fee earners are contactable 24/7 so it is vital that no caller is ever given the impression by a PA that a fee earner is unavailable to external or internal callers. The only exception to this is when a fee earner is in a client meeting when callers should always be given an assurance that a message will be delivered, and the call returned, as soon as possible. If pressed by an internal caller as to the whereabouts of a fee earner, PAs may respond by saying that the fee earner is working at home but currently on a call and that they should expect a return call as soon as possible.....

Clearly working at A&O means there is no such thing as "asleep".

A spokesman for the firm said they had tried to get someone to comment but everyone was working from home and currently on a call but RollOnFriday should expect a response as soon as possible.
