CSET Summer School

Just wondered... Has anyone attended any of the summer schools in either 2008 or 2009 and what your experiences were? Is it worth applying for and has anyone had any positive experiences with any of the sponsoring firms?

I went on the Summer School last summer. I really would advise applying, it looks good on your CV but it really does give you some invaluable advice and I came out the end of it with a much greater advantage over the other students in my year. Surprisingly unexpected as well its really good fun and teaches you a lot of useful skills, especially networking.

I went in 2008 and found it really useful. It went through daily tasks of a city lawyer and gave really useful information and guidance in applications. A lot of people who went got TC's. It's also a good idea to get used to the application procees for CSET as it's similar to TC ones. Good Luck!

Was involved with this (in a minor way) for a couple of years - yes, it's very useful if you want to understand more about what City / commercial lawyers actually do, and quite good fun - but you should be very clear that CSET is not a traditional summer scheme: in particular, the firms that organise it are not actively seeking to recruit participants at that stage (they use proper summer schemes for that).
But otherwise, go for it.

Hi can u give any tips for the application form and a heads up on what to expect from the online test/telephone interview? I really want to go but they receive a lot of applications, they have 200 places this yr and last yr they received 900 applications!

I applied for the CSET Summer School this year. I remember reading from previous years that the phone interview questions are based on your application.
I am about to do the verbal reasoning test. Does anyone have any advice about it, or could anyone tell me which company provide the test (is it SHL?) so I could familiarise myself with the format first?
Thanks

I went on the summer school last year. It's a really good week and would certainly advise you to try and get a place.
The content of the week isn't anything special, if you're serious about a career in law you should know all of the things they are telling already, however the debating and the workshops are good fun.
The best thing for me was the networking aspect of the week. You get to meet trainees who are more than happy to answer all your questions whilst sat having a few chilled out drinks. I know a few people who changed their minds about wanting to work in the city after talking to trainees.
The last few nights do tend to turn into a drinking session, you're given free time to go where you want on the Wednesday and Thursday then a dinner at the Law society on the Friday. Wednesday night we spent in Kensington, Thursday in Covent Garden then went clubbing after the dinner (free wine all night @ dinner).
Its a really good week in which you can learn things, it also means you get a week of being a student again mid-summer which is great fun. I'm hoping to go back as an ambassador for one of the weeks this summer.
Any further questions just ask.
