It's squeaky bottom time for final seat trainees as March approaches, and news of this year's retention rates starts to emerge. Here's the latest:

So, maximum kudos to Stephenson Harwood  for retaining all five of its trainees (and that's despite the dreadfulness of the firm's toilets). Given that SH only kept on half of last year's March qualifiers, that represents a significant improvement.

Well done as well to Weil Gotshal , which is retaining its entire intake of, errr, two. Also scoring high marks is Slaughter and May, with a very respectable 96% retention rate, up from 87% this time last year.

Of course one swallow does not a summer make, and there are still plenty of firms which seem reluctant to hand out NQ jobs. As previously reported, Hogan Lovells still looks to be heading for an unsettlingly low 66% retention rate (with final numbers to be confirmed soon) - pretty much the same as last year's 68%. Assuming that is the final position, it will be doing marginally better than CMS Cameron McKenna which is keeping a piss-poor 19 from 30 in various UK offices - including one in glamorous Aberdeen.
