Large numbers of staff at Hill Dickinson and Berwin Leighton Paisner have volunteered for redundancy.
Insiders say that 60 people have volunteered for redundancy at Hill Dickinson's Liverpool office. All have apparently been accepted, and most of them will have their last day in the office today. It makes a reasonable hole in the 200 or so redundancies that the firm is trying to achieve. A spokeswoman said that as the consultation process was still ongoing the firm wouldn't comment.
Meanwhile, sources at Berwin Leighton Paisner say that all the non-fee earner redundancies are likely to be achieved voluntarily - no mean feat given that the firm is looking to cull 15% of its wage bill. A spokeswoman declined to comment.
Given the woeful state of the recruitment market, it's surprising that anyone would put their hands up. It may well be that many of these volunteers would have been selected for the chop in any event, and have just taken advantage of a more generous redundancy package offered to volunteers. All the same, voluntary redundancies are clearly preferable to compulsory...

As someone who took voluntary redundancy from them, I can confirm that this is precisely the case.
