DLA Piper and Ashurst have confirmed that they will be making redundancies in their Australian offices. Both firms are remaining tight-lipped about the numbers involved and the offices affected.

Sources suggest that DLA will be axing around a dozen fee-earner and non fee-earner jobs in its Aussie offices. The news follows the firm's announcement that it will be making 251 redundancies across its UK offices, with those affected to be offered enhanced redundancy packages. Whether this spirit of generosity will extend to the firm's Australian staff remains to be seen.

Details are equally unclear from Ashurst, which entered the Australian market last year through a tie-up with Blake Dawson. A number of roles are already believed to have been chopped, according to a Lawyer report, but the firm will only say "some adjustments" have been made in response to "a very challenging market".

These latest redundancies follow Clayton Utz's confirmation at the end of last month that it would be implementing a recruitment freeze and cutting a number of fee earner roles. Expect more firms to follow suit as the Australian market, praised to the skies over the last couple of years for its burgeoning resources work, starts to look a little less of a sure bet.
