Norton Rose is continuing its expansionist strategy by snapping up yet another Canadian firm: Calgary-based Macleod Dixon is set to join the firm's international network in January 2012.

The tie up comes almost a year after Norton Rose announced its merger with Ogilvy Renault and Deneys Reitz, which gave the firm its first footholds in Canada and South Africa respectively. The latest addition will bolster the firm's Canadian practice by 250 lawyers, provide offices in Kazakhstan and Russia - and also in Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia, giving Norton Rose its first Latin American presence.

According to Canadian Managing Partner, John Coleman, the firm's second Canadian merger is all about creating a "powerhouse" to take advantage of energy and mining opportunities. But for Group Chief Exec Peter Martyr, the union is also intended to be a spring board for the firm's ambitions of world domination to become "one of the world's leading suppliers of legal services". In particular, the ultimate prize of a US merger.

  A Canadian powerhouse celebrating yesterday

For now though, the firm will concentrate on its newly muscled international outposts. In Canada, the firm will operate under the imaginative new name Norton Rose Canada and will boast around 700 lawyers, while the new Latin American offices will be stocked with 60 lawyers.
