An Egyptian court has sentenced a lawyer to jail for saying that women who are under-dressed in public should be raped as a punishment.

Lawyer, Nabih al-Wahsh, was appearing on an Egyptian TV panel show to discuss a proposed bill on prostitution laws in the country. During the debate, Wahsh said that when a girl walks down the street with "half of her behind showing ... it is a patriotic duty to sexually harass her and a national duty to rape her." The lawyer also said that scantily clad women were "inviting men to harass them", adding that "protecting morals is more important than protecting borders".

The lawyer's remarks didn't go down well at all with the other panelists on the show, or the public. Egypt's National Council for Women said that Wahsh's comments were a "flagrant call" for rape in violation of the Egyptian constitution. Following the outcry, the state prosecutor brought charges against Wahsh. A court had now sentenced him to three years in jail and also slapped him with a fine of EGP 20,000.

On a positive note for Wahsh, he won't be offended by the sight of women in ripped jeans for some time

It is not the first time that Wahsh has made controversial remarks on TV. On another show, he declared "If I see an Israeli, I will kill him". And he also got into a brawl on TV with a cleric who said that women should not be forced to wear headscarves.
