Nabarro announces a 78% trainee retention rate

It is trainee retention season again as the March qualification date approaches, and Nabarro is the first firm to release its official figures.

The firm has confirmed that it will be keeping on seven of its nine-strong intake this spring, according to a Lawyer report, giving it a solid retention rate of 78%. That is an improvement on last September's results, which saw Nabarro keep on 69% of its trainees (nine of its 13 qualifiers).

But while 78% is clearly an improvement on the firm's September result, it is considerably down on the firm's 87% rate for March 2012, and also lower than most other major firms' results last year.

Meanwhile in other retention news, Clifford Chance, which was supposed to be telling its fourth seat trainees whether or not they had NQ jobs by 21 December, is still remaining tight-lipped about how many trainees will be kept on.

The first 80% is likely to involve 1 useless trainee and 1 trainee wanting to move elesewhere. The second 80% is likely to involve, at least in part, an unceremonious dumping of 20 trainees.

There is a huge difference between a smaller firm retaining, say, 8 out of 10 trainees ("80% retention") and a larger firm retaining 80 out of 100 trainees ("80% retention").

The first 80% is likely to involve 1 useless trainee and 1 trainee wanting to move elesewhere.

The second 80% is likely to involve, at least in part, an unceremonious dumping of 20 trainees.
