Do these people not have, like, real stuff to worry about?

It's the ambient racism that gets a pass from most people. A milder form of cheeseburgers and his lovely meal at the chinky.

And CommentIsFree isn't a Guardian editorial, nor is it written by staffers.

The author of that piece, Coco Khan, is a journalist who is content coordinator for the Guardian Small Business Network, so maybe she is a staffer.

are the guardian trying to say that the oppression of women in many countries whereby the culture / law requires them to cover their hair / faces is in any context not worse than freedom to dress the way you want to / just different.

i see loads of actual racism in the boardroom / on the train. its rife (calling it out isnt easy) - a bloke on the train the other day when it was busy said to his mate "well i doubt that chinese looking fellow has got a first class ticket", a partner in a meeting a couple of weeks ago when talking about an indian associate " the other one is like that too"

According to her literary agent: "Coco Khan was born, and lives, in London where she currently works as a journalist for The Guardian."

Sorry, it seems staffers and freelancers contribute. I had thought it was just freelancers.

"Perhaps it’s the passing comment you make on your new Bangladeshi neighbours’ children. “Poor girls,” you say to yourself, when you see them walk to school in their headscarves. And you mean it – you do feel a bit sad for them that they should be denied the chance to be like you (which is obviously the best way)."

Presumably everyone of earth thinks their values are the best, otherwise they would change them for other values. So everyone's a racist? Huzzah!

And huzzah for imputing attitudes and thoughts to people you've made up. I'm convinced. But there again, I am officially ESN.

and you've met them all, and seen the racism everywhere.

Or maybe they just didn't like you?

phone-in radio shows are, of course, the test of how an entire nation is. I only need to sit in the back of a blackcab to understand the British.

that's just what I was thinking. Although perhaps you're not; perhaps you just know a bit more about Ireland than I do.

it's okay tho, I'm immune what with the constant racism I've both practised and experienced since birth.

I tell you what is racist it some dozens or hundreds of ostensible Muslims roundiing up and killing loads of other Muslims ostensibly because of a difference about the righbtful inheritance of the leader of the faith about 13 centuries ago, But of course, I am told the perpetrators are 'not true Muslims.' But there seem to be a lot of it about.

And before one thinks otherwise I am well aware of the Holocaust and the Reformation and the Inquisition and the Thirty Years War and more.

What have adjectives and nouns got to do with it?

Frozen water is a tautology

Are you arguing grammatical tautology or logical tautology?

I suppose it is a tautology/pleonasm distinction.

Frozen ice is (like burning fire) a pleonasm - but is pleonasm a subphylum of tautology?
