Perhaps they didn't want to sell, but let's say they're a decent sort living in an overrated suburb of Birmingham for example.

All is good, but then a weapons-grade bellcheddar moves in next door. Their house is losing value at the rate of approx £20k a week as word spreads and the area takes a bath in terms of house prices.

It's a no brainier.

Big houses are quite hard to rent for any length of time as they tend to be rented by people who are after short term accommodation having sold a property and not quite found what they want to buy yet.

Hyoo you may also find that at some point you are old and decrepit and can't deal with stairs and don't want to take half an hour to walk from your favourite armchair to the kitchen and back.
